I feel bad for people like this, at least on some level. It’s important to be concerned about your overall reputation as a person, but it has to be mentally exhausting to think every aspect of your life has to be for public consumption.

I think that’s why it’s not a coincidence that people like in the OP were the same ones who fought tooth and nail to keep covid restrictions going as long as possible. They could tell everyone how good of a person they were simply by not leaving their homes. They didn’t need to; people like that were still working and getting paid.

There's a recent study that showed how the carbon emissions over 15 years from a well maintained ICE car are actually less than from replacing that car with a new EV. It's also worth pointing out that even though you're now driving an EV your old ICE car is presumably still in use by somebody else. You can't even try to pretend that you've managed to reduce emissions.
