I had noticed that before you didn't need a passport to go from USA to canada, then they did, 9/11 was also done to give an excuse to clamp down on rights. They did the The Real ID Act in 2005. You don't need an ID to vote but you do need it to travel between states. Since oxctober 2021 you need a REAL ID, which is a new drivers license that has a gold star on it.
