Show notes:

" Nancy Bass Wyden's family has owned the Strand Bookstore, a beloved NYC cultural landmark, for 91 years. Recently the NYC Landmarks Commission -- an opaque group appointed by the Mayor of NYC, which has vast unscrutinized power over what happens to the city -- threatened to landmark this icon. That seems great superficially,, but landmarking imposes financial burdens on non-corporate business owners that are tough to bear -- and bookselling in the Age of Amazon is a razor-thin-margin business for independent bookstores. A highly funded tech center opened for business nearby, and it's possible that this landmarking is a way for developers to run smaller businesses out of the area, grab the beautiful real estate in which the Strand is housed, and turn it into profitable condos for the wealthy and high end retail. The hearing is Feb 19 at 9:30 am at 1 Center St. Be there! "
