Haha this is great. I browsed the MTV history on wikipedia and apparently this song was written at the same time MTV began its video music awards spectacle. To my ears it pokes fun at mass media entertainment and consumerism, but MTV went on to air the music video of this song anyway - to be ironic I suppose. I imagine that's part of the joke, that the lyrics go right over the listener's head despite the message.

Yeah, honestly it says a lot about MTV that they were secure enough at the time to run a song that is 100% poking fun at them. That type of attitude is exactly why people loved MTV so much, because MTV wasn't afraid to give airtime to things that might run against their corporate agenda, which in the long run ended up helping them out a lot.

Adult Swim is the modern example in that regard, but cartoons instead of music videos. Of course there is always some semi-hidden sociopolitical agenda despite allowing experimental programming at behest of corporate agenda.
