How can you ‘cancel’ a movie that’s 22 years old and a massive cult favourite?

[–]insta 15 insightful - 2 fun15 insightful - 1 fun16 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Yeah, the post is dumb but it's more of a commentary on cinema culture.

If you've watched Netflix's originals it really takes me out of the film because I can just feel the checkbox ticking when I watch the show.

Remove it from circulation. Ban it from being distributed. Remove the clips from Youtube. Same thing as Mrs. Doubtfire, Not Without My Daughter, and other crimethink movies.

They will attack anyone who says they like it.

[–]LarrySwinger2 16 insightful - 4 fun16 insightful - 3 fun17 insightful - 4 fun -  (16 children)

There's nothing in the link to suggest the film is being cancelled. Are you trying to polarize people? Is someone paying you to do this?

[–]Chipit[S] 5 insightful - 5 fun5 insightful - 4 fun6 insightful - 5 fun -  (14 children)

It's a link to a quote that explicitly points out the problematic nature of the movie.

Tons of movies and other media have already been cancelled for transphobia. It's happened to Dave Chappelle, to Harry Potter. It's happening to The Mandelorian right now.

Carano, who plays the role of Cara Dune on The Mandalorian, has made transphobic jokes on Twitter. In explaining the joke and the reasoning behind it to a follower, Carano stated that she was “not against trans lives at all. They need to find less abusive representation.”

People often defend transphobia by insisting that they were driven to it because they were “attacked” by trans people who have requested not to be misgendered, harassed, or disrespected.

The implication – that trans people only deserve respect if they are “polite in asking for it” – is a common technique for perpetuating the oppression of people who are (justifiably) upset about the fact that they are being oppressed.

https://www.comicsbeat.com/the-mandalorian-and-transphobia/

The author of the beloved Harry Potter book series is using her platform as a famous, very rich, white, cis-woman to attack trans women, a marginalized group often target with bigotry and violence.

https://www.pajiba.com/film_reviews/all-the-harry-potter-stars-whove-denounced-jk-rowlings-transphobic-tirades-from-daniel-radcliffe-and-emma-watson-to-percy-weasley.php

Ricky Gervais has posted a series of seemingly transphobic tweets prompted by J.K. Rowling’s support of Maya Forstater, a researcher who was fired for tweeting that a person cannot change their biological sex. In later tweets, Gervais implied the tweets were meant as jokes.

During his 2016 hosting of the Globes, he deadnamed Olympic Gold medalist Caitlyn Jenner from the Golden Globes stage. His 2018 special “Humanity” also included several jokes about Jenner.

In all of those instances, it's the person who's being attacked for alleged transphobia, not the film being criticized for its content. You may have your disagreements with it, but it's an important distinction. Films are not, in general, being cancelled for the content contained within. But all of that's beside the point. The fact of the matter is that you're intentionally misleading people about TBL.

[–]Chipit[S] 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

Why are you defending cancel culture? Since you immediately thought of it first, I highly suspect you're a paid shill. Nobody defends this garbage other than SJWs or paid agents. Which are you?

[–][deleted] 9 insightful - 5 fun9 insightful - 4 fun10 insightful - 5 fun -  (4 children)

He's not defending cancel culture, he's opposing your way of doing things. Chipit, you butter bean.

[–]Chipit[S] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

You're doing it too. Stop it. You're on the side of the powerful against the little guy. Don't you feel creeped out when you do that? You should.

[–][deleted] 8 insightful - 6 fun8 insightful - 5 fun9 insightful - 6 fun -  (2 children)

Sir, I was born assimilated into their side. You were as well. Pretty much everyone born in a modernized society has, and plenty of the old-world cultures still clinging around have as well. It's an old system of control, one propagated by man but not made by him.

Does it creep you out that you have to untangle these influences from your life? Do you think it could be done in one day?

Chipit, I've talked to you on here many times. I know where you stand, and I know that you have more webs in your heart than you would admit. Does it creep you out that I despise your mental habits? Does it creep you out that the world is influenced by evil? It should.

See, I can be cute too. Oh, Chipit, you nancy.

[–]Chipit[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I don't get these weird pulp psychology tricks you try to pull. I'm a simple man. I see someone shilling on the side of power, I call them out on it. It's just that easy. Stop being on the side of the powerful against the little guy. Just stop it. Today.

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I've literally spoken to you about Native America, where you acted as though the five hundred distinctly different tribes deserved what they got. You can say whatever you want about being on the side of the "little guy"

And I hate that imagery. To you, the Powers That Should Not Be are big mighty folk, while we are all weak little things, eh?

Ricky Gervais

I used to be a fan but that guy is a real dick. He was a fat sack his entire life, loses the weight, and then went on a tirade about fat people like he wasn't just that dude himself. I mean his whole comedy routine was based on it. It seemed so two faced.

Not that anyone should be cancelled, but it's hard to care about him.

[–]Chipit[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

The problem with defending freedom is one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels.

[–][deleted] 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

That's a good quote. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.

soon they'll have to ban movies that feature real transwomen, as it will be obvious they are not women, which is transphobic. Then they'll have to bad movies with actual women, as they clearly show that women are nothing like transwomen, which is transphobic, and then there can be no more movie industry at all

Is Big Lebowski transphobic or not?

How about Mrs. Doubtfire?

[–][deleted] 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (31 children)

The answer is no.

[–]Chipit[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (30 children)

"Isn't that what makes a man?" "Hmmm... Sure, that and a pair of testicles."

Explain how that's not transphobic. It clearly is. Not all men have testicles.

Mrs. Doubtfire has the infamous scene. You know it. When Mrs. Doubtfire is caught by one of the Lawrence boys peeing standing up. When Daniel’s kids discover Mrs. Doubtfire is not a cisgendered woman, their first response is to threaten to call the police and assault her. Many trans women have reportedly been called “Mrs. Doubtfire” mockingly.

https://www.ranker.com/list/why-mrs-doubtfire-sucks/jacob-shelton

“Violence against trans people, especially trans women of color, is on the rise, and this is due in part to our culture’s assumptions that trans people are sneaky, lying, or perverted. We can’t change the ideas that were propagated by our industry in the past, but we can keep them from existing in the future.”

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (29 children)

Who's side are you on? Not all men have testicles? Being born with testicles makes you a male, even if you chop em off or lose them to mischance (or misuse) you are still a male.

I don't give a shit what that article says. I can purchase the Big Lebowski through many different stores, online and in real life. Nothing has been cancelled. If it ever does, why would I give a shit? The Big Lebowski is a nihilistic flick. One of the few things I truly want expunged from this planet is nihilism.

Plus, it's not transphobic to be against trans people. I feel no fear when confronted with trans people. I feel pity, compassion, and honest confusion. I don't like that we use these terms so poorly.

Pedophiles don't love children, they rape them. Calling someone "transphobic" doesn't mean they are scared of trans. Disingenuous language bothers me, ol Chippy. I argued this with you pretty early on, I think.

Plus, it's not transphobic to be against trans people.

    You heard it here, folks.

Say, how about getting up under your own name and saying this out loud? In front of HR at work? Or a bias response team if you're at school?

    [–]Comatoast 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

Damn. That's some luck. Women are crucified for that shit.

    [–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

It's not luck, and show me ONE "crucified" woman who called out trans people. You mean somebody like JK Rowling? She is alive and well, not strung up or lynched. Most people roll over when confronted by an internet mob, or when confronted by antagonizers like u/Chipit. If you come across stupidity, or mindlessness, call it out for what it is, don't put your head down so you and your own can feel good and safe, and don't exaggerate. Try to use careful language that actually fits the situation.

    [–]Comatoast 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

You know what? My apologies for replying to the straight up comments line on s/all. I didn't read the full stream of context there about your complaint being with people exaggerating word use, and that was my mistake. A hilarious mistake, but still.

That said, JK has lots of money to defend her livelihood. The average person can't take a chance on having their ability to work revoked for sharing an unpopular opinion, not to mention being shamed out of social groups andpissing on any chances for networking. Personally, I don't take too many threats seriously over the internet, but people are rapidly getting ballsier about exactly what lengths they'll go to so that they can get their point across.

    [–]Chipit[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

Rachel Ara, Vaishnavi Sundar, Meghan Murphy, Cassie Jaye. More than I can remember. Wow, you really don't see this, do you? That's what censorship does. It works. It keeps you from knowing just how awful cancel culture really is, and how many people get hurt by it. They (you) think you're on the side of the righteous, when in fact being against people being able to speak their minds pretty much screams "evil".

    [–]Chipit[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (10 children)

Yeah, that's a load of crap.

What's so wrong with denouncing transphobes? Not all men have testicles, just like not all women have ovaries. You're a far leftist, I don't get the disconnect here. You should be all over this.

    [–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (9 children)

You can touch yourself later to your knowledge of me, Chipit. I call out stupidity and mindlessness when I see it, and yeah, it causes me a lot of grief, but it is worthwhile. I'm not a far leftist, my guy, but you can assume whatever you want about me. It'll make your fapping fantasy that much better if you let your imagination run wild.

    [–]Chipit[S] 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (8 children)

OK, let's try a few quick questions, all of which should be easily answerable:

Is the social justice movement a good thing, or warmed-over Marxism?

Is the USA the most racist country in the world?

    Do all men have testicles?

Is lived experience is the primary way in which knowledge can be obtained?

    What's 2+2?

    [–]BiHorror 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

There's a difference between pedophiles and child molesters js. Not all pedos are child molesters and vice versa.

    [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

There is no love involved, period. The word is misleading.

    [–]BiHorror 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

I didn't say there was? I was just stating that there was a difference between pedos and child molesters due to the "they rape them" part of your previous comment.

    [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

A pedophile and a child molester are seen as the exact same thing these days. Same with transphobe/homophobe and someone who is morally against these things. My argument with Chipit stems from this.

There is no love involved between people are are called pedophiles and children, just like there is no fear between myself and trans person, so these words should not be used to try and describe molesters or anti-trans/gay people. I will argue with people over their disingenuous language all day, because the words we use matter. Maybe I am not explaining myself very well, which just goes to show that word usage and language is really vital when explaining world-views and such.

    [–]BiHorror 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Okay, I get what you're saying now but still... I don't know what to tell you, mate. I mean, until more accurate words/terms are created, those will be used (especially by majority of society) for time being.
