You know, if this movie is good, you're going to see "He who controls Le spice controls Le universe!" become a meme

Check the old movie too. It is still a good watch.

And books!!!

I don't know why folks hated the movie. I think it's a very good adaptation for something near impossible to adapt. The series were good too and filled in more detailed parts, but was limited in many ways and even better in others.

I tried to watch it recently, but it just seemed a bit too corny. Maybe it hasn't aged well.

Not sure if I want to see this. I've read (parts of) the book (never got around to finishing it unfortunately). I also saw the Jodorowsky's Dune documentary and I ended up downloading Moebius' storyboards when they were posted to Facebook. Because of this prior exposure, I expected a very different colour palette and a very different cast of characters. The Bene Gesserit in this trailer look nothing like I had imagined them. Not sure if I like the dehued almost monochromatic look of these scenes in the trailer. What personally struck me when I first read Dune was the author's sense of humour, which I did not expect in what I assumed was a very serious work of sci-fi. I get it that this new interpretation of Dune is mainly aiming for realism above anything else, but his trailer seems so... serious. I also find it very telling that they do not show the spice in the trailer. Almost like they're terrified of admitting that this was originally a story about the global drug trade made intergalactic. Contrast this to Jodorowsky's approach to the story, which was to center and highlight the "druggy" aspects of Dune, saying he even wanted the movie itself to be "like an LSD trip". The seriousness and starkness of the trailer suggests that this interpretation has stripped the story of any hallucinatory aspects.

Didn't know about the Moebius storyboards. That guy is genius. But don't let these previous attempts taint your next experience.

I never felt like Dune was the most "realistic" sci-fi - but I did find it the most politically intriguing and sort of realistic with all the scheming and intricate dancing with power.

Not just about the drug trade. Also about fuel/energy, environment, rare commodities, power. Some organic spices used to be more valued than gold. Ketamine is worth more than gold in some markets. Also, this is the first of two (or more) movies, so the spice may be more prominent in the second.

The Lynch stillsuits were the best, compared to the books. IMO, They should have riffed on them to improve them (if possible).

Jodorowsky seems to have been an insane genius, more of the former than latter.
