not sure if it's the right subverse
when I was surfing Voat quite some months ago, an user bitched about Netflix suggesting him propaganda works that he didn't like, that he never had demand for. which, considering that I watch quite a lot of movies, made me search for alternatives, and I quickly found Criticker.com but it turned out to be more of an IMDB (a review site) alternative than a Netflix alternative.
it's for both movies and TV, anime, et cetera.
after using it (sorry for not being original with figures of speech) for quite some months, and for reviewing somewhere about 2200 films (some only with ratings, other with mini reviews of maximum 500 signs allowed on that site, which is an optimal maximum size) I ended up deleting it out of (if ineffective, if silent) protest. why? because I've learnt that the forum has a pre-moderation policy. which is bullshit. I've sumbitted a negative rant against a Russian movie director (Zvyagintsev) on a topic specifically entitled "which directors do you HATE?", I was reasonably polite, even though I utterly hate this particular director's guts, but the fucking MODS ended up not approving it.
Criticker is a freemium website, I would be EXTREMELY happy and probably get drunk if someone made an open source alternative to it.
so without further ado, what are its main pro's and main con's, that I noticed?
pro's: if you watch movie marathons with friends, or just move isolated single instances of movies with friends, it has "joint recommendations", which are, movies that neither you and another person, provided they also have an account, have watcher, and that you both have a high "probable score" for.
also, if you hate a movie and rate it low, it would also predict low score for all similar movies, even if similarities are not obvious. so, the site is good for filtering out Jewish/Communist/fill-the-blank propaganda.
recommendations are broken down into genres and sometimes mediums and sometimes also decades, which is also a minor pro.
con's: recommendations are not always accurate. MEANING, if you don't know what movie to watch, the recommendations will not be afwully accurate. however, if you have a particular movie in mind, that's where the site actually IS helpful, at least helpful in avoiding disappointment, the site is fairly good at predicting your score for a given, particular movie.
it's not free. I've never tried the paid version so I don't know how it feels like.
also movies have to manually uploaded by a user, and then manually approved by a mod, which is BULLSHIT and takes days.
their formula (https://www.criticker.com/explain/) is brilliant and can theoretically be used for any other product, such as different individual Youtube videos, books, video games, food and drink recipes, hell even maybe friends and lovers, or career types.
there doesn't seem to be anything here
