I don't like the joker character. So tired, so boring.

So I put off watching the movie until a really boring week.

And it was good. Actually watchable as a normal story, not needing its comic book roots to be meaningful and moving.

The could have just called it "the clown" and made it about a clown who loses it, and it would still be a good movie. The lead actor is captivating, with pathos and relate-ability. The world is well formed, and again, relate-able.

Not something I'd want to watch twice or three times, because it is so grim, but the author of that piece has got a chip on his shoulder the size of a mountain.

I found the movie deep and well worth a second or even third viewing. There's so much there. For example, the stairs.

Every time he climbs the stairs, it represents him trying to keep his sanity. Trudging up, carrying a heavy load. Every time he goes down the stairs, it represents him losing his sanity. After the hospital records scene, for example.

By the end of the movie, he's dancing down the stairs. It's genius.

And the Gary Glitter song when he finally fully becomes The Joker? Inspired. The song is by a well-known evil pedophile, so we all feel uneasy despite its stirring melody. The Joker's descent into villainy doesn't make us feel good, because he's a villain. Instead we feel disturbed, thinking of what evil means.

The movie is just full of stuff like this and it just gets better the more you discover.
