Memetics (aka memeology), a pseudoscience, is the study of information and culture based on an analogy with Darwinian evolution. Memetics describes how an idea can propagate successfully, but doesn't necessarily imply a concept is factual.

Coined by Richard Dawkins' The Selfish Gene as analogous to a gene, "Meme" is a "unit of culture" (an idea, belief, pattern of behaviour, etc.) in the minds of individuals, and may reproduce and influence another. A meme's success may be due to its contribution to the effectiveness of its host.
