While I'm usually the first to decry identity politics, it is worth noting that this woman accomplished something amazing and unprecedented in a field that is overwhelmingly male. If she inspires more girls to go into STEM fields, that's good.

I see your point in that her sex shouldn't matter, but I do think it's nice that she's getting credit for the fruits of her research instead of the usual " some scientists made this breakthrough". It's my understanding that her input on this project was instrumental in it's success, so I'm happy to see her receive credit for her work. Good for her.

the algorithm she "created" was actually made by a Japanese team, she then pasted it into the code:

(Try viewing the original page if the formatting is screwed up. Their research can be downloaded as a PDF)

Meanwhile, Andrew Cael, who wrote 850,000 lines of code out of the 900,000 line project, is being astroturfed off the internet while the girl in the OP is being pushed into the spotlight:

So Brave!

I'm confused about the brave part...

If what you are suggesing is correct, then possibly brazen.

Although, individuals are often selected as "heroes" in these situations for political reasons.
She may not have had any say in the way this is playing out.

Last, if you need an algorithm to assemble a picture, then it's not a picture in any practical sense of the word.
That's an image of a black hole in the same sense that submarines can swim, or high jumpers can fly.
The meaning of the word is stretched to symbolic distortion.

The post you link doesn't seem to over-emphasize her gender, so I don't see what you are getting at.

why do they have use code to "create" a picture. photoshopped it? fake pic? All our pics from space are fake.

Every digital picture you've ever seen was created by code that interpreted data from an electronic sensor.

Yeah I've been noticing that. I think their new redesign is insanely buggy and it's actually crashing the site
