Exactly. Respect is earned. I can choose who and what I want to respect.

A lesson many don't understand. Respect is earned you can't demand it. You can demand obedience if you have power but it's a very different thing from respect.

I've seen it with teachers many times. Teachers legitimately respected by their students have no need to demand obedience, the students will believe the teacher has their best interests at heart and take the advice accordingly. They'll usually do what the teacher says simply because they trust them to be right.

Then you've got the "you must respect me because I'm in charge" types, you'll be obeyed only because people fear reprisal, they don't respect or trust you, and the instant that they think they can get away with defying you they will.
