The spread of harmful misinformation has become an untenable problem on Reddit. Its latest incarnation has seen life-threatening untruths being propagated by anti-vaxxers and conspiracy theorists, and Reddit’s administration has stated that it will not meaningfully curb the myths disseminated by these bad actors. In response to this, many communities on the site have gone private in protest.

/r/GIFs supports and stands behind these communities' efforts to stem the effects of false information, but we have chosen to remain open as a means of amplifying their message. We encourage all Redditors to vocally reject misinformation, and to stymie its spread by demanding that only verifiable facts be given support (whether tacit or otherwise).

An in-depth explanation of how misinformation is harmful can be found here. (https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/pfeu8w/our_stand_against_misinformation/)

Jesus H Christ these people are insane. "Lives are on the line, so we can't discuss things that might impact vaccine sales" and meanwhile the vaccine isn't working, and might actually be harming people... but no, we can't discuss that because "lives are on the line" but meanwhile lives are also on the line with the mRNA injection side-effects, but apparently those lives don't matter so no one can talk about them which makes everyone believe they don't exist? What a god damn joke. Reddit is literally evil. Manufacturing consent for pharma companies while thinking themselves as doing highly moral work. I'm running out of words to explain how fucked up this all is.

What do they think the age demographic of reddit users is? 85-95?

Those incoming waves of school kids from 2005/6 have grown up fast.

Disclaimer: I stopped using reddit years ago, but my theory is it's less insanity than common human stupidity.

The ~80% have been cruising along this whole time, doing and believing as they're told. What's happening now is their controllers have a new plan for them, and they're simply obeying the new instructions. I mean, there's obviously no actual thought behind their beliefs in the covid hoax, the ridiculous "cloth filter to block viruses", social distancing, and all the rest.

Just look at the percentage of the masses who no longer believe faggots, trannies, and pedophiles should be removed from society on sight. Embracing extreme perversion doesn't come naturally to people, it's due to the forced 'updating' of their programming that everyone with media or culture contact is exposed to.

The whole phenomenon of controlling the beliefs and behaviors of the masses is pretty fascinating. And depending on one's perception of our species and one's position within it, can be a bit disquieting.

I think these are all good points, but that concerns about misinformation are also valid. In short: if a source has corroborated scientific evidence, which is peer reviewed by scientists who do not have conflicts of interest (whereas some of them may), then it addresses facts and research that can be trusted. If instead there is a GIF with a claim that misleads people to information that is not corroborated in this manner, then it's potentially quite harmful. Think for example of the goofballs who believed Trump's comment about bleach as a treatment. Think also of his claims that COVID19 was a hoax. He caused numerous deaths in the US. Who did he benefit. Who does the misinformation benefit. (The wealthy crooks who pay for the the spread of the misinformation and disinformation.)

The more clicks you give reddit the better for reddit, do yourself and the rest of the world a favor and don't give them any.
