If this many people would rather destroy themselves than live in the world as it is, our society as it is must be more fucked up than any society has ever been before.

This is basically standard in declining cultures. Read some history. Declining cultures are full of eunuchs and other sexual freaks.

Yeah. This has occurred to me as well. But the scale of it this time is beyond anything I can think of, even in historical examples.

Sexual Personae by Paglia is a treasure trove of examples of these types of patterns of sexual expression in late stage, decaying civilizations. It's well worth reading. I think the only thing unprecedented about our current situation is that we have mass communication which amplifies it.
