I don't even know if they're getting paid or just getting a salary to do their job or else.

Some are people working cheap jobs, some are just useful idiots that actually buy the ideology, and some are both. Your last quote is prescient. I do think there is a silver lining that some of these people probably have their eyes opened to what they're truly doing after doing it for long enough.
