It just goes to show how strong Saidit is in comparison. We've got good mods and good devs. They keep the site running, bless them. What's happening to Hexbear is what happens when a disruption and demoralization campaign works. The only difference being that on Saidit the campaign is being run by paid social media influencers who coordinate behind the scenes on chat servers, while on Hexbear it was their real userbase that did it. Just goes to show you how miserable the Left are all the time. Read the essay "Exiting the Vampire Castle" for a good example of this.

"Some of the attitudes I’ve seen towards the developers and admins have been very sickening, expecting someone working on the website to bend to their every will and command and not being thankful or even displaying basic human kindness and decency towards them."

Reminds me of some of the noisier users here. Let this be a warning to chill the fuck out and act like a civilized adult. Hexbear is a free service and the mods and devs are giving the users a full refund.

Some people wouldn't know when they are being targetted by agent provacateurs even if they all had it stamped on their foreheads.

Look at this banned comment. I think some of the mods are trolls, but maybe they're just "the real leftists"? It's quite the shit show.

I only see a blank page. Even archive.org archived blank pages. Look at these captures. What's up with that? Are they somehow shadowbanning entire sites now?

[–]Node 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

Link works fine, but the archive is blank. The minimum you need to allow (per uMatrix) is the hexbear.net address, and the www.hexbear.net address with the 9 CSS, 1 script, and 1 XHR. None of the other addresses or elements are necessary.

Here’s the deleted comment at the bottom of this https://www.hexbear.net/post/94999 post. But it's also showing at the top? Not sure what they're doing there. But this was not a agent provocateur. Some amazingly unselfconscious comments on that post.

I get that mods feel burnt out. I don’t see how this is helping.

Users largely want the vegan/non-vegan vitriol to be treated similarly to other sectarian issues. Enforcing that rule will resolve most of the issues we are having right now, and it’ll reduce the need for mods to ban a dozen people an hour.

No links to that site work in either of my web browsers, they connect to the URL but the pages look exactly the same as those archived pages. Blank.

Odd. I'm using chrome on an iMac, with uMatrix doing my filtering, in California. (hi fbi) There were 702 on there earlier, so I know I'm not the only one. I wonder if they block countries, VPNs, or address ranges.

[–]antireddit 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Most chapocels are probably still happily living in the shitlib pigpen that is reddit. They are pretty much free to say whatever they want on reddit anyway. I'm not sure why they were even banned as there are other dirtbag left subs on reddit that are just as bad, if not worse.

[–]Node 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Pretty much the story of this site from day one. It’s very clear that these people are internet moderators. The kinds of people who cling to petty internet power because they’re bullies and like to exercise any kind of authority they can over people. They’re not people interested in making the site a good or pleasant place, and have no skill for or intention of de-escalating situations. They’re a bit like IRL cops: Always escalate until you can justify the exerting your maximum possible amount of authority. In this case handing out permabans.

/u/theameliamay, you reading this thread! lol. One day you'll apologise and this will all be over

[–]bobbobbybob 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

lol. Here's you, stoking the fires, and throwing shade at me at the same time.

my bug bear is that an admin created a sub with the sole intention of getting rid of me as a user and i never got an apology, just more attacks.

oh, and lol to the hexbear site, are they parodying theameliamayniac?

cracking knuckles Easiest solution to this I think is to make me a sitemod. Not only will the rest of the mods immediately look better by comparison, but pretty soon after all moderation would cease to be necessary due to mass depopulation

the only way to remove all bad posters is to remove all posters, I’ve been saying it for months

holy moley, they made pronouns part of the usernames!

See thread link at the bottom for more comments on the drama.

LiebknechtFour they/them/she/her (this is not a joke)

I’m as guilty as anyone else here when it comes to the occasional sectarian squabble, but this last week has removed any desire on my part to belong to a movement that seems increasingly focussed on self-destruction. I’m here for the liberation of the working class, not this. Bullying has always been a misunderstood tactic in the dirtbag left and it has been made worse by the fact that we have no power, so we turn on one-another. Everyone involved (including, probably, me) has engaged in a lack of charity and care for each other, and in its absence, we are reduced to empty signifiers of identity that serve no purpose but to tear us apart.

If this last week represents the limits of what western leftism can be, then the fascists have already won. If the only unity we accept is unity through repression, whether through the power of “office” or the power of abuse, then we are damned to collapse again and again. If our unity is not based in broad solidarity, we are just another iteration of the western left’s advancement of purity over pragmatism. If we cannot disagree without destroying one another when we have no power to enact any kind of program, then God help the world if we ever get that power. If constructive criticism at a bad time is met with a banhammer and not a “hey, could you repost this on Monday, please?” then the idea that we could ever engage in coherent self-criticism (or the self-forgiveness that needs to come with self-criticism) is, at best, fantastical.

This is bad for me. This is bad for all of us. I’m taking a break. I’ll decide whether I want to come back later. I feel like everyone involved can only make things worse, and I don’t need more reasons to be stressed out and exhausted.

Take care of yourselves and each other. If we can’t do that, then we have nothing else to offer anyone.

First 'good' comment I saw alluding to the drama. From this post.

Jabrd banned for saying that the vegan/non-vegan issue should be treated similarly to other sectarian issues. - https://www.hexbear.net/post/94999

THIS.

This is why I'm frightened to death about these people gaining any real power.

yet, you support that exact abuse of power by an admin here, as it is directed at someone you don't like. Self awareness is a wonderful test of humaninty

It's not really those peons you should worry about, but worry itself is already decades too late. It's all happening no matter what we peons do.

Chapo people are so toxic they got banned from Reddit. Think about that. These extreme leftists got banned by Reddit. How annoying and fucking obnoxious do you have to be as a leftist to piss off other leftists to the degree that they ban your whole community?

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

How annoying and fucking obnoxious do you have to be

Totally agree but if we want truly free speech we have to take the assholes along too. Otherwise there's always someone deciding what can't be said and their agenda probably doesn't align with our wellbeing.

Hexbear site just got rekd.

Taken down by members who were probably trusted, as at some point.

If they're accurate, pretty poorly tbh. I ain't running to hexbear though, that site is trash. I thought D3 might have been a programming snob when I saw his comment about hexbear before I looked myself. But nope, totally accurate.

Pretty sure I don't trust that user count though.

It does change. The main reason that site is trash is because 'libs' are their far right. They're not entirely joking about that. But it's a bit sketchy on the function side too.

No links to that site work in either of my web browsers, they connect to the URL but the pages look exactly the same as those archived pages. Blank.

When reddit launched their site it was almost entirely bots masquerading as real people. To this day they still represent a significant amount of traffic there. I never even heard of this hex bs, probably 6 real people there and a bot swarm.

[–]Node 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

I joined reddit in 2005, and it was pretty great back then. Left for good in 2015 during the Pao! episode.

Saw somewhere the commies were banned from reddit, then started that site.

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Damn, ten years there. That had to be a transition.

[–]Node 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

You got to know many people back then, kind of like here. No subs, just reddit on one page. Then waves of school kids started showing up around starting and ending semesters. The Digg invasion was the major shift, and it started becoming more retarded and commercial.

[–]Node 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Site data would be cool to see, but I don't know any numbers.

You typed a s instead of u.

[–]JasonCarswell 2 insightful - 3 fun2 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

Thanks for the ping.

You're right. We should all just give up and stick our heads in the sand.

Taken down by members who were probably trusted, at some point.

Speculation. I don't know anything about that community, their goals, views, politics, mindsets, intelligence, their members, their process, their trust, etc.

If anything, there are learning lessons, things to avoid, and reasons to try with improvements - not reasons to quit.

Edit: Looks like they need user levels and ways to filter them. I've already described my levels idea. I'm drafting up the filters idea.

"leninsrage" sounds like me :D

Site team really needs to compartmentalise community management and PR from development from moderation.

The combining of all areas creates a mentally draining and emotionally exhausting environment for the entire group. You need a very specific type of attitude to deal with it day in and day out. Those working development should be kept away from it. High turnover in team members having to handle that should also be expected.

Leninsrage:

This definitely hits the nail on the head.

I come to this website (like the sub before it) to basically just shitpost, read shitposts, maybe occasionally learn something or teach some people something. I see an obvious drama thread that triggers the red flag in my head, maybe I’ll read some of it out of Bile Fascination for shits and giggles and eye rolls, but I’ll almost never engage with it. If I even click on it at all.

This is really the kind of attitude you have to have when approaching this bullshit on the internet. Yeah, I have some deeply held opinions on these topics, and frankly, they’ve so far mostly gone against the grain of the authorities/majority opinion here at least in broad strokes. But I also know just how fruitless and unnecessarily stressful and emotionally taxing it is to engage deeply with online arguments like these. After years of taking yelling at people on the internet way too fucking seriously, I know when to just keep my mouth shut and walk the fuck away. It’s not that important.

When I was a terminally online lib in my early Reddit years, a frequent user of /r/SubredditDrama among others, going way way way too fucking deep into the anti-GamerGate rabbit hole, that level of time and emotional investment into petty online argumentation led me to a very dark place when Trump won in 2016. My response to that (aside from deep depression, identity crisis, and an escalation of my alcoholism) was to almost immediately cut myself off from all political and meta-internet communities, basically everything except sports. Eventually I suffered a second identity crisis and came out at the end as a communist, diving back into the online world as a result, but I knew then from experience how deeply toxic and self-harming it is to become addicted to meta-internet drama. It’s equivalent to turning self-medication into self-harm.

Remain detached, at arms length, from this kind of shit. It’s not worth it, and considering this community past and present already attracts emotionally unstable personalities becoming addicted to that is almost literally making suicide a self-fulfilling prophecy. Stepping back and bricking up a barrier of ironic detachment is, in this case, a lot healthier than binding yourself intimately to these topics.

except, of course, I remain engaged, just finding a set of beliefs that I can stand by, instead of keeping those that no longer serve.

I think that site drama may fuel memes for years
