UNIX is more open than Linux (YOU ARE 100% legally allowed to alter and resell the binaries), and so open you can download all the source code to :

Some tiny parts, GNU tools, have communistic licenses on them banning you from putting them into iPhones fully (depending on GPL version of lefty GPL)

Linux.... is a stolen copy of MINUX, then polluted with GPL, and a ton of "stolen" NetBSD drivers, then also newly polluted with GPL, and of course tons and tons of GNU tools.

Google used Linux for its Android, regretted it, and swapped to a non GPL version of very modified netBSD for its new phone OS Fuchsia with a open source kernel (for now) called Zircon. If google swaps to Fuchsia across a few cell phone companies... it is expected that 4 years later , open source update releases will get less frequent, then fully stop 4 years later.
