Linux was fucked the moment they let in the leftoids and shat out that retarded "Code of Conduct ".

What we're seeing now is Zombie Linux.

is there any open source stuff lately that doesn't have this kind of thing?

I know open source means means anyone can fork the code, but it would also be nice to find existing development groups that take a different approach. I guess you're right though, if they aren't there already the straightforward answer is just to make them. And you're right, that is the beauty of things being open source.

freebsd looks like it has a code of conduct that includes "gender identity and expression". does it tend to be better than others though? I've seen a few people suggest it on here now.

(in fact, I think there's already be someone who was very good in freeBSD dev but also turned out to make trouble and tried to claim ownership or something like that).

I head heard a little bit about the split where DragonFly BSD was created, is that what you mean here? Or was this something different?

Yeah I like how open source means anyone can do what they want with it pretty much, and it's a good reminder that anyone can take the software in the direction they want to, it doesn't have to be with some particular development community if their style doesn't suit me.

I don't mind an expectation to be polite to others, but I would prefer something like "be polite and stay on-topic". Even though I can start my own dev group it would also be nice to find existing projects that don't have this kind of stuff in the code of conduct etc, if they are out there. Though it's possible starting my own group would be easier.

What makes freebsd a good alternative lately?

Hm. Thanks. I don't know much about the FreeBSD or the community so it's interesting to hear some perspective on it. I haven't started trying alt stuff for phone so I might do that at some point, it's nice to know it's out there. The OS I have now sends me ads and I don't like it. And I'd like to be able to customize it a lot more. And just know what it's doing.

For the split, I don't know exactly, it was a guy's conference on BSD. But I doubt it was about dragonfly, it seem like someone who has been removed because he became too much trouble.

Hm ok. I had heard that the DragonFly person split because he was committing too much or something, it was too big a change and there wasn't time for others to review the code, he was too prolific. So he just made his own project. I heard it was fairly amicable considering. But I don't remember exactly, I'm sure it's all documented more accurately somewhere.

It's nice to know why people are asked to leave a project if they are, just re censorship and related issues.

Well anyway. I can look more when I'm ready to look for a new OS. Thanks for the perspective and for reminding me about the nice things about open source, it's easy to forget a bit sometimes when I get frustrated with something or other.

Interesting, thanks... these look like they address issues I've been running into, actually.

I like having less stuff displayed, I find it sortof distracting. In my phone OS, and on my old windows computer, I don't know how to turn of not just ads, but a lot of the stuff that's displayed on the desktop and in the interface by default. I switched from windows a little while ago and I find it really pleasant to be able to make the display much simpler. I guess each person has their own things they want from customization.

only those groups which already devoid of toxic behavior avoided this

          openBSD survived.

for linux, i use gentoo now because it is more 'pure' .. linux distros actually break developers good configs with their shit configs..

gentoo uses the developer configs and only changes what they need to make it work

i switched to openBSD the day that happened.

because it is true, and now we have further proof

now linux has become my 'gaming system'

i use it only for things that are entirely impossible on openBSD ..

kinda like i did with apple before

          then linux ...

          now openBSD ..

the tards just keep taking over what is good, until nothing good is left and the masses notice the problem

It's an upside down and backwards world we live in now. Where Microsoft owns Linux and does nothing but vax passports and censorship and propaganda.

Burn Big Tech and everything as far as i'm concerned, the world is ending.

          Capitalism has killed society.

We all worship money and create increasingly stupid silly crappy things in the name of chasing moar profitsss.

Passion for creating something good and worthwhile that lasts? Irrelevant. Do the easy thing to scam and cheat people out of their wealth instead.

I don't want to be on this ride anymore. It was never fun to begin with but now it's becoming unbearable.

Nobody owns Linux, at least I thought it was like that.

I wish I could buy hardware that came with a data sheet without NDAs with the promise of it always being available. If you look at Linux, they just hack up some drivers and hope for the best, because they literally don't know how the hardware works. In a way, you literally can't buy a good computer these days. If you bought a computer 30 years ago, you would get a manual.

is there really no good option for hardware right now? Aren't there groups that are trying to do things better in this regard? I feel like I have heard of some but I can't remember offhand.

There's 10 year old hardware that is fairly open (the FSF uses those machines, which is easy to find), but that's not being produced anymore. Since the invention of methods to hide circuits in chips, there is no way to know what nefarious things these chips are doing anymore.

You can simulate a CPU on an FPGA too, but the same issues plague a FPGA. Certainly, as a country, if you don't have the whole supply chain in your own country, you have no idea what you are doing.

In a way this concerns everyone, but if everyone were like me all current hardware would be banned from sales and e.g. Apple wouldn't even be able to operate. Thus, the problem is that my fellow humans are too stupid and ruin my life because of it.

hmm. I don't know much about hardware and didn't realize about people hiding stuff in chips. I keep seeing people recommend this or that company for more open hardware but I guess we're not there yet, since it looks like there's no open manufacturer for some of the components.

Maybe I can look into what the FSF recommends for now. Thanks. Hopefully the situation will improve as more people become aware and interested. There are at least people trying to handle the open hardware issue even if they haven't gotten to all the components yet, so that's good at least.

More people need to understand that free and open source software is like an illegal alien in the corporate world. By that I mean that it is seen by corporations as cheap labor/product to be exploited, and nothing more. For example: "I expect you to clean my bathrooms and/or do manual labor in a field, and I don't want to pay you a reasonable wage or provide medical benefits." The above sentence being analogous to how business sees open source software.

Again, Linux and the entire FOSS ecosystem is nothing more than free product for business to exploit from their perspective. Another example of this is how many online TV services will refuse to work if you are on a laptop running Linux, even while all their servers either run Linux or FreeBSD and they sell locked-down, ewaste consumer appliances like tablets, game consoles and streaming sticks that rely on and run... you guessed it... Linux or BSD by the millions.

The GPL is the only mechanism of defense that the public has against the interests of big business; no wonder they slander it so much.
