As someone who's been trying to make Linux my home away from Windows, I totally agree with the author's "fears for the future", all of which threaten to destroy what attracted me to Linux in the first place.

  1. Stability - many 'distros' are approaching the Windows update-intrusiveness
  2. "Portability" and it's subset Runs on old, less-capable hardware
  3. Schizoid graphics behavior
