Hey, I was trying to install nvidia drivers (shudder) after upgrading to ubuntu 20.04. thing would kernel panic when trying to install drivers version 440.xx , hadn't been able to use ubuntu for the last two days. I tried to search for the problem and its solution with little luck.
Not guaranteed to work, but I did this:
Enter BIOS settings. Disable: Hyperthreading, speedstep, virtualization, anything that is not needed for booting up had to go. Set the mode to 'power saving' just to be safe. Somehow that worked and now Ubuntu is back.
Just posting this so that people can find this a little bit easier. Not everyone thinks of going to the bios settings when they have a problem like this . I know I didn't!
