People think poverty causes crime (actually the rate of criminality is pretty steady at every earning level) but you don't see the people working 3 jobs stealing or raping as much as those with no job and the same amount of benefits.

This does have an effect, and you assume there are jobs for everyone who wants one.

Where I live, in California, Governor Gavin Newsom shut down almost every private business for coofid for 9 months, many did not survive. Add inflation on top of that. We have had a HUGE increase in petty crimes like stolen catalytic converters, flash mob store thefts, car break ins, etc etc. We literally put people in a position where they cannot legally earn a living, and it definitely caused a massive increase in these types of crimes.
