I love imagining a time line where Alan Watts was accidentally put in a psych-ward for a 72 hour observatory hold & meets with the psychiatrist for the first time:

”So Mr. Watts, why do you think we decided to hold you here? Do you feel there may be a way we can help you in some aspect of your life possibly? Have you noticed yourself acting strangely?”

”It’s funny you should ask that as we did decide to hold myself here, didn’t we? I don’t think there’s any way you can help particularly - just keep being yourself, whether you do or not ultimately doesn’t matter because this is and isn’t you and whatever actions result from your or our behavior was destiny to begin with. We are all one, for you see, I have actually imprisoned myself as part of the “game” of hide and seek I play with myself on a cosmic level, as I am God, I am you, I am everyone, and everyone is me. Why we chose this game, I’m not quite sure, but I’m sure it will be interesting.

As for acting strangely, what is “strange”? I think it’s more insane for an individual to delude themselves into believing they’re just like everyone else, rather than being themselves with child-like confidence and free with their acts of expression. So no, I don’t think I’m acting stranger - I think the older I get, the more normal I act, not that I was never not acting normal in the first place.”

”Okay Mr. Watts, I see. Starting tomorrow the nurse will come by to give you 500 mg of quetiapine and 4 mg of clonazepam. We’ll start you off slow and can always up your dose if the results aren’t what we’re aiming for, but I think this combination will be just the fix you need!”

”If you think it’s what I need, then I think it’s what I need, and it’s what God thinks need as well as the Creator of this grand play. I say we flow like water - I cannot wait to see what happens after I take your medical fix! I’m sure we’ll both feel better. I’m glad I planned this for myself.”

”Ok Mr. Watts, I’m glad you did too. Goodnight. Remember the nurse will be around with your medicine tomorrow.”
