Mr. Woytek brought up an interesting point in a recent letter on Feb. 10, “Voting reform.” In the letter he indicated that he would favor a written test where potential voters show their knowledge of current affairs. That proposal presents a conundrum of sorts. The test sounds a lot like literacy tests that were forced on Black Americans to suppress their vote in the Jim Crow South. That is a bad idea. However, if a test of basic civics would eliminate about half of the Trump voters, it’s a good idea.
