As a longtime Indians fan and season ticketholder, I write this with much consternation. I won’t get into the debate (which never occurred in the light of day) over the Indians name change, as it is done.
However, I’d like to shed light on a few things. First, the Dolans bought the team in 2002 for $323 million and the team, as of April, was worth an estimated $1.15 billion, per Forbes magazine’s annual rankings -- a tidy appreciation which came from the fans’ passion for the team and its history. All the time they’ve owned the team, the Dolans gladly and willfully peddled the nostalgia associated with the team’s name, history and mascots. In 2018, they traded Chief Wahoo for the All-Star Game but Dolan told Terry Pluto they were “adamant about keeping the name Indians.” Another profit grab.
Now, Paul Dolan, Chris Antonetti, et al. have suddenly become enlightened in an effort to unify the greater community? All these years, all I’ve ever seen is the community rallying together (I have a T-shirt that says so) because of the Indians.
My Mom once said, “Nothing worse than a hypocrite.” Except a fifth-generation one who should know better. For shame, Dolans.
Frank Johns,
Hudson
