I'm a centrist, although for this US election I've been leaning right due to Biden's stupid transgender pandering.

Not surprised. Would you have leaned towards biden if he had been silent on it? I'd ask how you'd vote if he shut it down but that's far to unrealistic a question to ask.

i'm black so there's nothing in any of this for me. regardless of who's running the gov't, we're never going to get what we're owed from this country, we're never going to be properly protected or cared for and we're never going to be equals so i really don't care to align myself with any particular party or ideology. that being said, i'm voting for the first time this year, and i'm voting blue. i can't really fuck with anyone that won't do the same. like, i saw someone in this very thread mention how dems are the reason the trans thing blew up and i mean, ok, i guess.. but, so? there are far more pressing issues than the transgender bullshit right now.. like, the whole pandemic thing we're still very much so in the midst of, for one. also, the same way they don't fuck with transgender folk is the same way they don't fuck with rest of this community. if Ts lose their rights, we're gonna be next. don't know how you could support that. politics is dumb man. i wish it were less about sticking it to certain groups and more about HELPING EACH OTHER.

No kidding. I don't think anyone planning to vote Republican must be paying any attention. I wouldn't blame anyone for not voting for democrats, but anyone casting votes for Republicans, unless we have a lot of CEOs and billionaires on the forum, are out of their mind.

I'm pretty far left on pretty much every topic, gun control, decrease in military spending, civil rights, universal medical care, debt-free public colleges, etc etc. The trans issue to me in the broad spectrum is rather low rung, at least for me. It is an issue where I do not align with the typical "left" perspectives; however, I believe with information about the ill effects of transitioning as a child, and more research on the psychological process (i.e. it is a fetish), that is how changes can be made in that regard. People need to keep talking about it to continue to raise awareness. However, personally, I would never vote for a Republican just because of how I feel on that one issue, there are US Supreme Court judges openly talking about repealing same-sex marriage and another conservative judge is headed there now, the cost for me is just way too high when you look through a macro scale.

I’m at a loss myself, considering Biden’s plans to pass more bills that would embolden fetishizing TRAs. You could vote third party, but doing so in a swing state might let Trump win. I’m just scared as I don’t know what to do and of course no one can tell me what to do, but the lack of emotional support is really taking its toll on me. I think to myself “if I vote Biden and he does all this stuff for TRAs and not the stuff for Covid and gun reform, was it worth it?” In 2016 I was able to hide from the election in a way cause I was in another country and that alleviated some of the pressure on my shoulders, but I can’t hide now. Not a lot of people ever have the privilege to hide. I don’t think I could live with myself if my third party vote helps Trump win in my swing state and that savage judge gets sworn in and takes away same-sex marriage

I don't believe any one candidate is going to check all the boxes for any single person, it is just impossible. I would recommend looking over the candidate's views and choose which one tends to align more with your personal belief system. Personally, I cannot mentally handle 4 more years of insanity, but I don't believe it is ethical to try and direct someone's vote. You can easily google both candidates and read through their planned policies and make an educated and informed decision, don't be swayed by media emotional pulls, make a decision from a place of logic.

Thank you, I don’t want 4 more years of insanity either, or my parents being one of the many brown-nosers to Trump, and their hateful means of engaging with me on issues. I’m not a democrat by any means either, but I won’t vote for Trump. But I don’t think I’ll vote for Biden either, even though Rush Limbaugh is tempting me to do so cause I wish he’d shut up

I don't really buy into any specific political ideology, I just want the world to be run in a way that is most efficient and causes the least harm, and gives as many people as possible the freedom to succeed. And I don't claim to know exactly how to accomplish that. Probably different methods depending on the conditions of each country. I believe in social justice causes like ending racism and sexism, and taking care of the planet, but I'm not a blue haired SJW, I don't believe that being a minority is a license to act crazy

I agree. These are my values but not at just any cost. And this should go without saying, but maybe this isn’t common sense anymore, but we still need to live in a society. I don’t think society should prioritize the most aggressively sensitive and dogmatic.

I believe in social responsibility and compassion, but also accountability.

I can respect that. Really honest answer and I can agree with the sentiment whole heartedly.

Damn. I can't imagine how it is to move through the world on it. I've heard a few stories on youtube, crazy stuff. Also glad I'm not the only on here.

If you don't mind my asking any particular reason why?

[–][deleted] 10 insightful - 2 fun10 insightful - 1 fun11 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

Nationalized Healthcare is my main issue as I believe profit has no business being in the healthcare or pharmaceutical industry nor should someone's ability to receive care be tied to their employment nor should someone go broke because they had the misfortune to get cancer.

I'm also in favor of things like universal basic income, decreased military and police spending, increased focus and spending on social programs, prison reform, worker-based protections, and wealth redistribution. And while I realize immigration is a layered and complicated issue, I think the ultimate goal should be global freedom of movement where everyone is free to live, work, and travel where they choose and not based on circumstances of their birth.

Another far left GC lesbian! I feel so alone out here lol

We definitely exist! It's weird because sometimes I'll get told I'm not really progressive for diverging with the left on trans ideology, but I can't think of anything less progressive than telling a girl she must be a boy because she's not girly enough or telling a man it's ok to enter women's spaces and tell women what to do and how to think so long as he declares he's a woman first.

My (American) politics trend left of center. The Democrats are now to the right of me on economic issues and chart stupid on gender identity politics. I'm not a socialist so the far left has nothing for me either. I find the left wingers to be unhinged and just as totalitarian as the right. I was a centrist in my 20s but the Bush II administration veered me left due to war on "terror" etc. Watching the Republicans willing to torch the institutions of this country, (let alone principles, credibility) for the sake of raw power means I will never vote for a Republican for as long I live. I am politically homeless, and I don't care that I am anymore.

[–][deleted] 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Economically- socialist democratic? I'm generally pro social spending like on universal healthcare and education and stuff. I hate using the term socialism though. My parents grew up under socialism and it was a whole different animal to the stuff the American right claims the left to be, it kinda sucked and was totalitarian for instance, and communism was far far worse.

I don't like where the "progressive" left is going though. Queer theory is totally bananas, and critical race theory is so divisive and basically claims that all white people are white supremacists deep down in their brains. Socially I'd say I'm a liberal and I staunchly agree with many of the ideas that underpin liberal democracies.

I also tend to think that different ideologies and theories will better serve different countries. E.g. a social democracy might work really well in a smaller country, however neo-liberalism might work better in a large country like the USA.

I'm not American, but I think Biden is ok as he seems more centrist than Trump. Would any democrat be against the TRA stuff in this day and age? Anyway, my 2c is that Trump is a full-blown narcissist, and will ultimately polarize people as he has been doing throughout his presidency. He also doesn't seem to handle international affairs well and I think China view him as a destablizing force so they have been flexing their muscles in the South Pacific lately. I suspect Americans will still elect him though because they rarely get rid of a sitting president. However, the document his government (so his policy advisors and lawyers) put together banning racial diversity training was quite well-done, so I won't say that everything the Republican party has done is awful or anything.

Serious question: Why do you think most Republicans have not blown up this gender issue? It should be easy fodder for them. Why hasn’t Trump?

    [–]Fuckyoucensorship[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Not the person you're responding too but taking a guess I'd say they're under the impression they'd loose voters over it, not that they would, I think right now it's a risky thing for them to discuss what with all the accusations they already receive. Their best game plan is to pick up the leftwing centrists and everyone else bailing out of the left side and let the democratic party continue to dig their own grave. They're also currently on the reactionary side, I think if the democrats put it center stage we'd see a more direct response but since they haven't the Republicans won't bring it up either.

That being said I think there's enough evidence if push came to shove they'd dig their heels in against self ID getting special legal protections (as any rational person should), especially considering the response to the bathroom issue a few years ago.

Tldr: They won't rock the boat and the democrats are basically doing all the heavy lifting in deterring people from their party, why would Republicans want to work any harder then they have to when their opponent is repeatedly shooting itself in the foot.

I'm Canadian, for reference, and I'm all over the place. I voted for JT in 2014 or whatever, then I started to change my mind when I realised he really didn't care about the environment. The CPC isn't any better on that front, but at least they don't pretend to be? And I also dislike him because I'm pro-gun, so there's two reasons from totally opposite sides. And there's Bill C-16 (the gender identity bill), where it's like... most of the people who are against it probably aren't really against it for the same reasons I am, but it's still a thing I dislike JT for. But I can't stand the religious side of the conservatives, which they probably almost all have, but at least some are more quiet about it than others — I'd never vote for someone like Leslyn Lewis who wants to take away abortion rights or gay marriage (and I don't think she likes firearms either). I do have some other right leaning opinions, they feel kinda asshole-ish to admit, but I don't think UBI (and the associated money-printing) would be helpful, I think having a low population is good, and I think our military spending is too low and that they'll probably have a lot more disaster relief tasks in the future... sandbags aren't expensive, but...

Honestly, I feel politically homeless or almost like some kind of political nihilist/retiree nowadays. I'm from the UK and seeing the polarisation that came from Brexit, the amount of fear mongering and total lack of integrity from both sides, and the issue being covered every single day by the media, again in a way that lacked any integrity by both sides just broke me.

I feel like now with covid the rest of the world is getting a more extreme version of that. Obviously there are seriously authoritarian regimes too and I'm hardly implying the UK is undergoing some sort of serious hardship in the grand scheme of things but the entire political conversation today just seems so optics-focussed with no interest in the crux of the issue. Like people are repeatedly chanting mantras for whatever 'tribe' they've chosen allegiance too. I watch the news and I feel a deep sense of alienation to that thinking in general.

I work in a very progressive, multibational organisation and I'm in conference calls with people from the US talking to me directly about their election going on about how they 'have to get it right this time'.

And all that is going through my head is you have a rapist pedophile who's son literally is compromised by the CCP and is smoking meth on business trips, and a sleazy businessman who has zero background in politics and is totally facetious 24/7 and regularly triggers huge international conflicts over Twitter, and there's a 'right' choice here? Someone not voting for Biden could only be a moron?

I think the whole issue here is constantly being forced to pick the lesser evil of two fundamentally broken options. I'm not interested in this game. I'm not interested in picking a side. This whole sequence of events is totally depraved and divisively contrived and you aren't having me be an ignorant pawn in something so fundamentally rigged from the get go.

That feeling of ambivalence you have is because the whole thing is batshit insane.

I am not completely 'resigned' to the world remaining like this forever, and I have some ideas on how I could personally change things, but that's a whole other post in and of it self. What I do know is trying to align my self with any 'side' or engage in this illusion in any sense is going to be a waste of energy. The whole point right now is to create as much division as possible.

I'm not edgy, I understand pragmatism, I understand working within the confines of a broken system to lead to very small incremental change, but this is beyond morally bankrupt right now. My answer would've been very different 5 years ago.
