Since I was a child, I've been deathly afraid of clowns. In fact, I cannot even look at a photo of a queer activist without wanting to cry :(

Pregnancy. A pretty illogical fear considering it has a much smaller chance of ever happening to me than to the average (straight) woman but I've had nightmares about being pregnant since I was a young child. Seeing pregnant women also freaks me out, I can't spend a lot of time around them and feel like a huge jerk but it activates my fight/flight response.

This is known as tokophobia! I have it as well but I've never had the nightmares, thank fuck. Pregnancy has always seemed like straight up body horror to me. "Miracle of life" my ass, bitch you've got a fucking parasite. No thanks.

I'm so glad someone else relates! I've woken up in cold sweat before from nightmares about pregnancy, it's honestly horrifying to me. I looked up resources on it now that I know the name and it's all about how it's an "obstacle for women who really want a child" and all this bullcrap, yeah nooo I'd rather not get patronised thanks.

Yeah the way people talk about pregnancy like it's an inevitability and not a choice doesn't help, and they really are so patronizing about it too 💀

I used to have nightmares I was pregnant and stuck with a baby and a dude forever and I don’t even know how it happened and it’s this awful sick feeling of dread.

I think it’s pretty freaky too, tbh

phone calls

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

I had a boss who was afraid of phones. We had no air con for a week (working in a cafe) because he didn't want to make the damn call. His girlfriend had to do it.

I'm more afraid of receiving calls than making calls. I dont mind receiving calls from close friends and siblings, but if it's from practically anyone else it freaks me out. I once tried to get a therapist and he called me a quite a few times, but I wasnt aware of it and told clinic that he didn't contact me. Phobia of phone calls is pretty common for people with trauma, and that's what I was seeking therapy for, so the fact that he didn't think of emailing me tipped me off that hes probably unqualified to treat me. Also the fact that I googled him and hes a a trans MtF who identifies as a butch lesbian, lol

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

lol what that is a wild therapist story haha. Yeah I can see how receiving them would be worse... I guess it's like general social anxiety + unexpected situation, less control over the interaction etc. I haven't encountered a therapist who solely did phone calls, like most would call and email. what an odd guy!

[–]lmaonope333 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

it's not really social anxiety, its trauma which conditioned me to be constantly waiting for the second shoe to drop so if i get a phone call I panic because I assume they're calling with bad news

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

oh I see. that sounds really awful I'm sorry :(

I’ve been future tripping a lot lately. So I would guess that would be my biggest fear.

Normally I tell myself if it’s not slightly terrifying it’s not worth doing.

Your future is going to be much better.

Future tripping, also called anticipatory anxiety, is part of the human condition of peering into the imagined future and anticipating the outcome. Everyone does this to some degree or other

    [–]florasis 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

I do this shit all the fucking time, thanks to OCD, and always imagining the worst outcome. Brutal.

I’m lucky enough to hopefully only have this issue for the next few months.

    [–]florasis 6 insightful - 5 fun6 insightful - 4 fun7 insightful - 5 fun -  (0 children)

I'm probably stuck with this for the rest of my life LMAO

I have panic attacks from public transport, especially busses, and people stalkering me. And I afraid deep water.

I have this irrational fear of public speaking. I overcame this fear during high school but for some unknown reason, it came back again during my first year of university.

I also have this fear of dining with people who aren't my family members. I'm not so sure when exactly I started having this fear but whenever I have to dine out with friends/classmates, I start feeling nauseous because of anxiety. I think it stemmed from people judging me for eating too slow or too little so I just became really self-conscious about it. So the idea of eating with people really freaks me out and in some severe cases, I can't even take a bite of my food.

There are people who turned their phobias into something lucrative. I'm thinking of Guillermo de Toro who as a kid was absolutely terrified of the idea of monsters and overcame it by becoming friends with them (creatively). A couple of movies later - he's successful and well-off.

I've tried that with post-soviet tax admin officials, all I got was more bills. :)

I bet reddithateslesbians knows a great deal about contraception despite not needing it, Bumfuzzle knows how to spot violent people, pixels is ace on building regulations and Buckskin sounds like a thorough planner. q. e. d.

PS: unrelated, but Bumfuzzle - love the username, cracks me up everytime (no pun intended) :D

i've always been scared of large bodies of water. like the thought of just being in the middle of the ocean terrifies me. i could probably calm myself down if i end up in a wide river or smallish lake. but if i were dropped in or floated out to a body of water big enough that i couldn't see any kind of land near me.. i'd lose my shit immediately. luckily, it hasn't happened. but i've dreamt about it happening and i always wake up from those dreams with my heart pounding out of damn chest. so yeah. fuck that. also, snakes. but that's recent. a neighbor's boa tried to eat me when i was like 10 and i haven't fucked with snakes since. can't even look at pictures of them without freaking out.

I'm afraid of engineered structures like bridges and buildings, not even particularly tall ones although ESPECIALLY particularly tall ones. It's not a dehabilitating fear - I'm in a building right now - but it's something I think about daily. Using a high bridge or overpass can get me especially white knuckled though.

Every time you cross a bridge or stand in a building or any structure that will kill you if it suddenly fails, you're creating a chain of trust - trust that those who designed it knew what they were doing and did not cut corners, trust those who made the materials to build it knew what they were doing and did not cut corners, trust that those who built it knew what they were doing and did not cut corners, trust that those who inspected it throughout the years for maintenance and code violations knew what they were doing and did not cut corners, trust that those who designed the inspections to violate knew what they were doing and did not cut corners, trust that those who were hired to fix any violations or degradation knew what they doing and did not cut corners, etc. I briefly dated an engineer and she told me I was not exactly wrong to be worried about this.

Anyway, I think bridge collapses are going to become more and more common.

This is a dumb one, but the dark. I'm really scared of someone hiding in my yard at night when I put the bins out or something.

    Electrocution, ladders.

Insects. The only ones I can stand are ants, mosquitoes and spiders - the small and non threatening ones of course. I'm not like this when I'm in nature but insects anywhere near concrete are the worst for me. When I have nightmares they usually include insects or some nasty animal like rats.

Unexpected loud noises, like someone yelling or a plate dropping in the kitchen, always freak me out. Also snakes.

Talking on the phone without some bullet points to help me along.
