In Danish love=elsker. To be in love/infatuation= forelsker. Kan godt lide=like. Lesbian=lesbisk(e) for plural. Bøss(er)=gay. This is a word that kind of just came about after lesbisk came about in like the 1970's or so in Denmark.

Spanish, love=amor, to like=gustar. Lesbian=lesbiana. I actually don't know what gay men use for gay in Spanish. I have a co-worker from Spain and he just uses homosekuel(he's not gay). I know when we moved to Puerto Rico from Denmark, I heard Chingada Madre when used on boys who were feminine or thought to be gay, but that means fucking bitch. I can't believe it...I've been around so many Spanish speakers and I can't think of any (non derogatory) word that may have been used for 'gay'.

Do you have different words for loving something like an object, a hobby vs a person? Different words for family vs romantic love?

For Danish-no.(that I'm aware of)

For Spanish-yes. For inanimate/or animate objects you'll use querer=to want or encantar=to appreciate, to charm.

Edit:

Different words for family members, besides for congregation-congregate, right? I can't think of any. The verbs just change, Danish is the same, the verb changes depending on the other verb in the sentence. Spanish the verb changes depending on noun and adjective.

That's a good way to explain it, I think.

Love: amore

Lesbian is lesbica

In Ukrainian it is:

Not serious love (and it can mean crush, and it can mean infatuation) - закоханність (zakohannist', "i" read as "ee").

Love to parents or friends or own kids or to work/items - любов (ljubov).

Love to your partner/wife - кохання (kohannja).

Lesbian - лесбіянка (just transliteration and added feminine ending, as our language is heavily gendered).

In Russian it's lesbianka (still has a very negative connotation) and gey, this one has a less negative connotation, because they use another word of abuse for gay guys.

For love - liubov

being in love (fem.) - vliublenna

adoring - obojaiu

One old slang term for loving someone from a distance - sohnut (the t is soft), which literally means going dry from unrequited love :)

Needless to say as a lesbian in a homophobic country I stayed mainly in the sohnut lane, the liubov part came later. :)

PS: Love this thread. My favorite word so far is elsker, I think in Swedish sth similar is used as a term of endearment, Älskad = beloved.

Obojaiu can be used to anything, tho, including food or your rock collection.

Yep, talk about obojaiu things. The other day I bought a chocolate cake with some cherry (vishnya) filling and some liquor syrop. Oh-my-God!

I wanted to get a room with that thing! It made me make pleasure noises I didn't know I could produce 😂. It was so good I want to find out who cooks at that palce. If it's a woman - I'm proposing to her!

Good cooked cherry dishes is my weakness too. And if it is a woman - you should propose her for sure :D

I seriously need to learn how to cook cherry dishes, if that's the way to get marry... :D

Did you get out of that hell?

[–]Innisfree 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

Out for a while and then straight back in. What's the circle of hell in the Divine Comedy for lesbians stuck in homophobic countries? Is it the 13th? :)

[–]florasis 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

I'm sorry. Well, I mean at least you're not a gay man :D

[–]Innisfree 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

Ahhh, now worries. I'm just dramatising for comic effect. But yeah, gay men have it much worse, not to mention that there are worse countries to live in, like Iran for instance

[–]florasis 8 insightful - 3 fun8 insightful - 2 fun9 insightful - 3 fun -  (2 children)

Yeah, in fact. I've read from someone experience in Russia that women were open about liking women without big consequences. So, it isn't as hard as for gay men. Still shitty country to live in, for many reasons than simply homosexuality. But yeah, you could have been a saudi arabian woman or a somalian, that would be far worst. I've enjoed your poetic comment about lesbian sex in movie. Which makes me guess that easter girls (you know, violet is ukrainian) are fucking cool :D

[–]Innisfree 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I'm not Russian, just live in the sphere of its influence. But what you say about Russia is what I've heard as well and similar to the situation in my country.

And yeah, we'll take the "Eastern girls" are cool :)
