Joke off Twitter:

-- What do the Titanic and Saoirse Ronan have in common?

-- Kate Winslet went down on them.

lesbian film

Kate Winslet

This was made for me.

Kate Winslet as a lesbian. The film I needed, I didn't know to need.

[–]Rubyredpython 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I've wanted Kate Winslet to play a lesbian for so many years. She's one of my big Hollywood crushes.

How are we feeling about this? I struggled to watch all of it, can't get used to the age difference (i know it's not that big - but it just looks like it is).

Every time a bloke makes a movie about lesbians (like in this case), my insides tighten and I am mentally preparing for anger/disappointment. Let's hope that Francis Lee (the director) who is gay, will not end up giving a more prominent place to men in the movie. I'm off to try and rewatch the trailer :)

Edit: BTW, Francis is a good director. His gay love story "God's Own Country" was great - gritty and real.

Edit 2: Ok, I've rewatched it: I'm a huge prude LOL, I dig it now :)

Yeah it took me a couple of rewatch to appreciate the trailer. At first all I could think about was how this is looks very similar to ‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire’ (watched this recently and was blown away)

Then the second time around, it hit me that Kate winslet is making out with a woman 😍

Third time around i actually paid attention to the story. Looks good, can’t wait.

I’m over the age gap thing. I think it’s generally creepy and it keeps making appearances in all sorts of lesbian media. I’ll probably skip this.

"I want to believe" (insert X-Files music) that it is possible for two adults to transcend age difference and find some sort of equality. But they would have to be some extraordinarily wholesome people - very very rare. Or they just transform their dynamic into something positive for both - again, rare.

As to the tendency in the creative industries to insert unequal power dynamics in lesbian relationships to appeal to heterosexual sensibilities of dominant and dominee - I vote against. Remains to be seen how this movie spins it.

[–][deleted] 10 insightful - 1 fun10 insightful - 0 fun11 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

Lesfic does the same thing, but the majority is not written by actual lesbians; I assume most are married bisexuals or bisexuals with little experience with women. And it reads as fetish, the age gap bit. That is the grossest part because they make a whole thing of it. I feel like always having uneven power dynamics in lesbian media ends up seeping into the community and affects younger women. It’s really gross to see male, and mostly-straight female fantasies of lesbians and our connections become ideas commonly connected to us. Like the predatory lesbian trope. In age gap its usually the younger they frame as predatory when the older should know better. I am just so tired of seeing lesbianism being made into specific tropes.

Some age gap relationships work, but very few. One person eventually needs to leave to grow

[–]Innisfree[S] 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Because lesfic is foreign to me, what you said is disappointing news, but not entirely surprising.

I very much agree with this, have seen it with people I know:

One person eventually needs to leave to grow

I'd also like to highlight that with the lesbian movies being seen as Oscar vehicles now, there are a few tropes that are perpetuated by the straight actresses themselves. Thankfully they are starting to get advisers, consultants for some movies, including for choreographing sex scenes, so it's less bothersome now.

Edit: clarity

Totally with you on that. The movies always show some sort of creepy power dynamic with the couple as well.

I'm definitely sitting this one out. I'll probably just watch Portrait of a Lady on Fire again instead 😁

Yeah, I am so over it, personally. It’s bad enough when it happens to me irl when i am looking for a partner.

TBH I didn't notice the age gap when I watched the trailer. I don't even know how far apart in age Kate and Saoirse are. I get what you mean though. Thing is, there are so few lesbian movies (one or two per year if we're lucky) that it immediately becomes this "it has to represent every lesbian experience accurately and look good for the straights who watch it because visibility! and we don't want to look bad" I get it but it's an impossible task.

            [–][deleted] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

20 years. And it’s pretty easy to not have a huge age gap considering most couples do not have 20 years between them, or even 10. It would be fairly easy to avoid creating these dynamics. Hollywood does the same with men and women in movies, or intentionally chooses stories with these types of power dynamics. It would be nice to see more similar age couples, and more couples where dudes are not somehow involved and the lesbianism isn’t fraught, but i guess that’s not interesting to heterosexuals, or even lesbians sometimes

I'm annoyed that yet again a man is directing a lesbian movie. God's Own Country was indeed quite good but still. Hopefully he won't fuck it up.

Well to counterbalance that, I heard Céline Sciamma is working on another movie now. Some more good news for us :)

so soon? She usually takes like 3-4 years to make another movie. That's awesome news ;)

btw I'm annoyed on principle. But I'm still excited for Ammonite haha

            [–]Innisfree[S] 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

I was also surprised. So far just news of a casting call for what can be vaguely construed as a lesbian couple. But the Internet may be getting ahead of itself. We can only hope :)

Not a bad principle to be annoyed on. I have things I have been sitting on about Carol (also directed by a gay man) - the way the love scene was filmed. Let us just say it felt stiff and cold. Maybe because Cate Blanchett was freezing in the studio and the DP couldn't get over the cliche of gliding the camera's gaze along their naked bodies. :)

            [–]spirette 13 insightful - 1 fun13 insightful - 0 fun14 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

I loved Carol and it was indeed shot by a gay dude. I rewatch it every year at Christmas (I know cheesy;) But it was also based on a book by a lesbian and the script was written by a lesbian. I personally liked the sex scene but I get what you mean. Meanwhile Lisa Cholodenko, an out lesbian, made the movie The Kids are alright, where a lesbian sleeps with a man.

All this to say that there are no guarantees and a lesbian can fuck it up where a man doesn't. But so many movies are made by men where the female characters are super pornified and it's gross. So my knee-jerk reaction is to be annoyed :)

About Céline Sciamma, that's nice! I didn't know about that casting call. Great to hear that she will make another lesbian movie :)

            [–][deleted] 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

It honestly is so much worse when a lesbian fucks it up just to appeal to dudes.

Saoirse Ronan, after playing Jo in Little Women is playing another lesbian! it's like Christmas has come early. Is there something you want to tell us, Saoirse? :) (I don't like to gossip about actors so I'll leave it at that)

It looks so great: the story, the chemistry, the sea, Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan. omg I don't think I will recover after another movie made about lesbians next to the sea (Portrait of a lady on fire).

            [–][deleted] 16 insightful - 1 fun16 insightful - 0 fun17 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Though it doesn’t have a trailer, y’all should look into Happiest Season. It’s a lesbian holiday romantic comedy directed by Clea DuVall, starring Kirsten Stewart. It’s slated to come out this November

Looks like it will end tragically. I just want some action stuff with happy endings featuring adults and not teenagers, maybe even a romcom or two. Is that really too much to ask?

I'm intrigued to see a movie about Mary Anning but is there any indication that this relationship/romance even occurred? fingers crossed

            [–]Innisfree[S] 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Frankly this is also the main appeal of the film to me. I think her story is amazing (and I love paleontology).

Francis Lee, the director, said there is no indication of her having relationships, she lived and worked alone most of her life. So his story is fictional. Apparently Anning's estate really didn't like the idea of the movie.

            [–]spirette 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Had never heard of Mary Anning prior to this and her story sounds indeed fascinating. I'm not surprised that the estate isn't fond of a movie depicting her as a lesbian: all women are assumed straight and if they remain single they are still assumed straight.

These people don't seem to realize that lesbians have always existed, they were just hiding, and that the nice old ladies down the street who were "very good friends" were very likely a couple. If there is no evidence she was gay, there is also no evidence she was straight.

            [–]Innisfree[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

This reminds me of sth Adele Haenel said ré the press calling the story in Portrait "amour impossible". The film shows how women found ways to live it, to make it possible. I mean they should look at Anne Lister, look at the Ladies of llangollen. I can also imagine what went on is some convents :). Like you say we were hiding because we had to.

I am hopeful about the future, there are so many women scientists (not necessarily lesbians) who have fascinating stories that can and should be put on screen.

            [–]ohbarnacles 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

That's disappointing. I found out that the character Ronan is playing, Charlotte Murchison, was in real life eleven years older than Anning, whereas Ronan is eighteen-and-a-half years younger than Winslet. It's not as sexy if one isn't borderline-inappropriately younger than the other apparently.

            [–]Innisfree[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Oooh, I didn't know there was a basis for Ronan's character - thanks! As usual real life turns out more interesting and instructive in its complexity.

Sigh, at the age difference. In my mind I will ignore it when watching the movie and focus on reading around Anning's life.
