I identify birds by sight and sound. I'm talking hundreds of those bad boys. It was just a hobby/interest years ago but it turned into some paid seasonal jobs too. It's a big part of most of my days, nearly every day I visit a nature trail for an hour or two to see who is there and keep track and put my data into a website.

that is so awesome! good for you :) i know a few birds too but not as many as you do.

Knowing even one bird species impresses me even though I'm at some advanced level! I'm happy when anybody even notices birds!

I think when the quarantine finally lessens I will possibly get together some beginner birding trips.

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

i took an ornithology course last spring and it was so fun. i can finally tell the difference between a few of the hawks. and tell the difference between the different dove calls. i learned so much. :) birds are such a diverse and beautiful group. birding trips sound fun!!

Thats cool, I always leave food out for little birds, no clue what types they are but they're certainly cute!

I don't do anything very well, but I fence, cave, and make needlepoints of video game characters. And I like fountain pens and japanese stationery.

Well damn what weapon? I started out with foil, hated it and went to epee.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I do foil as it's the only thing my school really teaches, aside from occasionally let us mess around with the other two and medieval weapons. I'd like to do more sabre though because I like all the swinging movements.

What did you hate about foil? I like that epee has the entire body as the target, but the heaviness of the sword was not really my thing.

[–]Fuckyoucensorship 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Thats awesome! Sabre is pretty cool. Fast paced but definitely awesome. If you like foil i could see that being a solid transition.

I never understood the right of way and was more concerned with just getting contact first so it ended up translating really well to epee. The weapon is bulky but once you've gotten used to using it its not a big deal.

Videogames. Plenty of videogames lol

Same! Got any favorites?

[–]florasis 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

The last of US, the witcher 3 and red redemption. In that order.

[–]reluctant_commenter 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Have yet to play them, but Last Of Us is on my list!

[–]florasis 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Ellie is a lesbian and she's cool. Although, the plot of the second part wasn't great. And left me disappointed, despite the pleasure of playing as a lesbian.

Mainly board gaming and video gaming. It will sound super geeky but I also really enjoy indexing old archives to make them searchable on family history websites and transcribing old newspapers to make them googleable. You can find really interesting stuff! There are UK and American newspaper archives where you can do the same thing but those have a monthly subscription. The Australian one is free so that's where I hang out.

[–]southpaw 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I checked that site out. Bless you. I wouldn't have the patience for that. I know a lot of volunteers where transcribing Anne Lister's diaries. Would you have any interest in that? I tried reading her diary and it's tough.

[–]CJLez 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I've just had a look and I wouldn't be able to make head or tail of her handwriting.

I play a mmo with my wife for a few hours every night. I like to go tanning and walk our dog. Idk if it counts but I'm constantly brushing my cats so much it might as well be a hobby.

[–]al-Amira 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

I somewhat recently (last year) started with leather-working, which is equal parts fun and frustrating. This summer I started learning HTML/CSS.

Other than that my main interest is my field of work/study. I also enjoy botany, something I currently don’t spend any time doing.

[–][deleted] 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

That is really cool. I really want to get into leatherworking to make journals, plague masks, and bags and maybe some armor because I'm a big geek like that, but it's one of those "after covid" things.

I'm also learning web development.

[–]al-Amira 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

There are some really great youtube channels out there for that (leatherworking in general). Personally I pretty much only watched Ian Atkinson's videos on youtube, as I find his videos to the best when it comes to explaining but of course that's subjective. I currently just do 18+ stuff, done some phone cases and airpod cases. But I want to make bags as well (will probably start with boxes and a toilet bag) and shoes. Shoes are my end goal so far, most likely a long long way to get there though, but I'm not in any hurry.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Yeah, I have a weird bag fixation. I guess like many women have purse fixations and collections, except my gay version is backpacks and messenger bags.

So I would love to be able make bags - in any material really, but leather is especially appealing - to exactly my specifications. I feel the same way about notebooks and I'm always considering getting a Galen Leather notebook cover, but they aren't just how I want them, so I'd rather make them myself.

I will check out those youtube videos. Thank you! Good luck with your current projects and your future shoes.

[–]al-Amira 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Thank you, and you too - with the web development as well. Edit: Well, bags are practical - and so I get that entirely. Having something that is designed to ones own specific needs seems quite useful, had I started earlier I would probably have made something where I could have my calculator, two pencils, two pens, an eraser and a rular - could never find something for those specifics.

[–]writerlylesbian 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

I have a few, but a new one I've gotten into recently is doing minor repairs on things like video game controllers, old game consoles (way simpler than the new ones!), I'm planning on taking my several-years old laptop apart to add a new battery and give everything a nice clean. I find it so satisfying being able to fix things. Hoping to move onto more complex things at some point, like my 3DS that really needs a new bottom screen.

[–]candiedDagon 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Ooh I love that stuff too. Just got into it since quarantine.

[–]writerlylesbian 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I've never been a very techy person, so it's been really cool developing this whole new skillset and appreciation of electronics.

Western mounted shooting. I’m not good enough to enter competitions, but I want to be.

[–]southpaw 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

I youtubed this and it looks like so much fun. What type of gun do you use? How do you train your horse not to be terrified of a gun firing right next to their head? How did you get into this sport? I have soooo many questions lol

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

My friend is a multi time world champion and so is his daughter, my vet, and a few friends all do it to. I bought a horse they trained for a back up that they ended up not using and that’s how this got started. I have 2 .45 single action ruger revolvers, an old repeating rife, we use blanks and have custom ear plug for the horses. Funny, in typing that out I just realized why I don’t think I’m good enough for competition I set the bar to high.

As far as training the horse goes everyone has their own way of doing it. I train all my horses to not be gun shy by starting off with a BB gun so the get used to the motion of what your doing with out the bang just a snap sound, and work my way up to a larger caliber round with their ear plugs in.

[–]southpaw 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Wow. This was very informative. Thank you for answering. That is badass that you use single action revolvers. I had to lookup horse earplugs and it wasn’t as weird as I thought it would be. Lol. I hope you compete one day. It looks like a blast.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I’m sure the gelding thinks we should be competing too lol. It’s hard trying to figure out a good pace to hold for the horse that also works with having to use single action firearms. He wants to go faster then my hands can keep up with basically, so we end up on the backside of the balloon a few into the pattern. It’s hard to come back from.

I'm really interested in permaculture and food forestry. I'm working on planting some veg for autumn harvesting now and getting backyard space prepped for more expansive planting next spring. I used to keep bees as well and am trying to attract some back into the yard, not necessarily for honey/wax collection but to encourage pollination.

[–]sunzzy 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Bees are awesome! I really wanted to have a beehive at my allotment but others who share the space have made it very clear they dislike the idea. (I get my revenge by stealing their blackberries though , muahahah :))

[–]Innisfree 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yep, I'm with you, with the slight reversal that I keep bees to have a second income and am working on making the practices on my small farm more sustainable. So, yeah cheers for permaculture!

[–]Innisfree 5 insightful - 3 fun5 insightful - 2 fun6 insightful - 3 fun -  (2 children)

I like fixing broken things around the house. It often happens that they end up more broken than I found them, but I'm getting better at it.

Chairs... I have a lot of weird chairs in the shed. That shed looks positively haunted at this point :)

[–]reluctant_commenter 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Do you collect the chairs, make them, or sit on them?

[–]Innisfree 2 insightful - 3 fun2 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

Make/repair- sit-collect - in that order. :)

I have friends and relatives who have been receiving chairs for Xmas for a while and who implore me not to supply them any more four-legged creations, so I've slowed down for a few years - hence the full shed. :)

I write poetry, play bass and go to a martial arts club. Kickboxing specifically

[–]VioletRemi 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Heh, literally me 10 years ago. Except it was taekwondo and later muai thai.

[–]VioletRemi 4 insightful - 4 fun4 insightful - 3 fun5 insightful - 4 fun -  (17 children)

When I have free time, I am mostly reading books or playing video games (on PC, consoles here helle expensive, and same games there cost like 5 games on PC). Not sure if it can be counted as hobby.

[–]florasis 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (16 children)

Of course gaming is an hobby. An hobby is activity you enjoy doing in your free time. Usually, PC are way more expensive than consoles, and they also require more expertise/expenses for constant updates. Games are more expensive, but at least, you can sell your hard copy

[–]VioletRemi 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (15 children)

Well, here PC not very much more expensive. I have powerful PC for my work needs, tho. And PC doesn't really need updates, as games always made with consoles in mind, so you need upgrade PC as often as consoles, on average. But just with buying games I can make the difference. PC games here cost around $15-20 (up to $30), while console games are often around $70-75 (and Nintendo games can cost up to $90). And you can not sell hard copy, as no one will buy in most cases here. PS4 Pro here cost around ₴13k, and I bought my PC with monitor for around ₴30k. And it is almost as powerful as PS5 will be. Cyberpunk 2077 in Steam and on Xbox here cost ₴900, while disk for PS4/PS5 of this same game cost ₴2200 (after backlash they lowered to ₴900 too, tho, but most games are much more expensive on PS4, and mildly more expensive on Xbox, than on Steam or GoG, on EGS games often more expensive than in Steam too, plus I dislike their politics). So by just buying games (especially on discounts) on Steam I will be in plus by buying PC - and I will have 4-5 times more games in total. And it is even worse in some countries nearby mine, where console games cost even more. Ah yes, dualshock is too big for my hands, my fingers hurt after playing it, same from xbox controller but less, only controller I can play is Xbox Elite one, it is smaller, with 4 extra buttons.

[–]florasis 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (14 children)

I usually sell games, if I don't plan to play them. Or I can just wait a few month for price to drop or buy second hand. I'm fine with PS. I don't know where you live. All these strange signs make me think of somewhere asian.

[–]VioletRemi 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (13 children)

Nah, in Asia it is much worse, especially in India. I am from Ukraine. Most purchases here are digital, because it is much more convinient to buy game for $15 than buy for $75 and then maybe sell for $30-40 with small chance of selling (so total cost will be around $35-45), as not much people that stupid.

[–]florasis 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (12 children)

So, most people in your countries play on pc? That's not the case in mine.

[–]VioletRemi 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (11 children)

Yeah. Cheapest PC here is at home of almost everyone. While only mid-high or rich people are actively playing on consoles. Especially on Nintendo, as for some reason their games are 50% more expensive than in Europe.

I would play on PC in any case, tho. As I am used from childhood to PC and "autistic" games like classic RPG's. My mother was working on two works, so she was leaving me in "Club of Junior Engineers". Where I was just left over in room with computers or in engineering room, and I was there completely left to myself, so I was playing those MS-DOS games or crafting some stuff. I ended up working as engineer and later software engineer. So I would have PC at home in any case. For work and to play PC exclusives like classic RPG's and other similar stuff. Previous gf had PS3 and PS4, tho. So I've played some games there, but dualshok was killing my hands, so I was mostly watching her playing.

[–]florasis 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (10 children)

Strange. Here in Italy is quite the opposite. Consoles are for the normal people.

[–]VioletRemi 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (9 children)

Consoles just don't have regional prices anywhere - plus prices are higher because not many sales and taxes are paid, so if in europe game cost $60, here it will be around $70 or more. And our average income here is around $150-200 (except few big cities). So Playstation game will cost up to half of monthly income, and Nintendo Switch game will be even more. While because of Gaben and his Steam, PC is all about regional pricing. Before Gaben we here were only pirating games, because it was just impossible to buy console and game to it with our incomes (during that time incomes were around $20-30), but Gaben came, made regional pricing, and nowadays here almost no one is pirating, because Steam is great service, have discounts often and prices there are very reasonable.

[–]florasis 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (8 children)

Damn, these wage are fucking shitty. Well. I suppose life costs must to be ridicolously low compared to west too. Well, I'm glad you found a way to play within your possibilities. Everyone deserves to have fun, and gaming is great

[–]sunzzy 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

I love singing, especially opera and classical style. I also play the harp a little though I never really practice

[–]southpaw 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

How does one get into opera? And harp playing? That's amazing.

[–]sunzzy 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I only started harp last year , its quite difficult but it sounds really pretty. As for singing I've been doing it my whole life , started getting lessons at 14 and I decided to focus on classical singing , I'm hoping to get into one of the conservatories but the audition won't be for another two years.

jigsaw puzzles and sneakers. i'm a woman of simple tastes.

I saw a while ago this film "Puzzle" with Kelly Macdonald about just that and absolutely loved the zenniness of the state when you're building a puzzle.

Thank you for a great idea for a chill evening!

[–]knownasness 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

funny enough, for reddit secret santa maybe 2 years ago? i said i liked puzzles in my bio and they gifted me a dvd of that movie haha. i havent watched it tho.

[–]Innisfree 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

That's really sweet and thoughtful. That film really is an ode to puzzles and people who like them. It's one of those films for a rainy day.

[–]FlanJam 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Photography, but quarantine has made it difficult to practice. Also have been getting into kpop & cpop, which is much gayer than you'd expect lol. And ngl, I find k/cpop artists generally more likable than western lesbian artists. A lot of western lesbian artists are a little too... eccentric for me lol.
