We warned them that trying to teach all the gender identity theory nonsense to kids was going to blow up in all our faces, but would they listen? No. It was all full-speed ahead, straight into the iceberg.

The TQ+ handed Republicans this issue on a silver platter. There's been general instruction for years about the LGB without very much controversy. It was only the addition of the gender stuff that resulted in this backlash.

this is the comment to leave over there... so far its full on panic mode.

Sex-Ed in my school, we divided boys and girls for the specifics of maintaining and puberty and all that, then were brought back together to talk about reproduction, safe sex practices and lastly to watch a video of a woman giving birth that had everyone a little green under the gills. The rest of the year was just learning about STDs, cultural norms, same-sex partners, even had a bit about body modifications like piercings around erogenous zones. And this was like mid-90s in a super-rural Conservative Missouri town whose Church was 3-times the size of our courthouse.

Nobody screamed or ranted, nobody threw a fit about what they were teaching us, and parents couldn't complain because students had to pass this class to be okayed to move on to high school. The push from Conservatives against this stuff is 100% purely due to the initial push by the progressives to FORCE it. It's the exact same with abortion. Most people were at least willing to pretend it didn't happen as long as it was a healthcare issue and had limits, but the moment they took that shit up to birth and started arguing that a fetus wasn't a sign of 'life' but a parasite? It's like they don't understand our system is a pendulum, and it ALWAYS swings back with the same force.

Our society has always been a give-and-take. I think to succeed we have to be 50 / 50, because despite claims to the contrary we are NOT a democracy and we were never set up to be one for precisely this purpose. I also find it interesting that parents are supposed to just accept their children learning about all this stupid, made-up gender bullshit because of 'representation', but I guarantee the moment someone brings up the idea of all kids participating in prayer in school it would be an absolute screech-fest.

prayer in school

That is an interesting point because two people of the same sex having sex or being in a relationship is just a fact. Being male and claiming to be a woman, all evidence to the contrary, is a belief system. I don't think that's lost on conservatives, but progressives are so deep into the belief that they can't see gender as a belief system.

we are NOT a democracy

I actually think we need to be 50/50 to maintain a democracy on issues where opinion is about 50/50.

People are elected to represent all of their constituents, not just the ones who voted for them, so a winner-takes-all approach would be quite unhealthy.

Otherwise, I completely agree

Man, those were the good ol days, when representatives listened to EVERYONE regardless of beliefs? These days politicians will straight-up spit in the face of half the people they supposedly represent just because they know they don't vote for them anyway. As soon as they get that 'majority' they close down all dialogue.

You can thank all the blue, pink and green haired freakazoomers on TikTok and YouTube grooming and bragging about grooming kids in LGBTQ++++++++ ideology for this outcome

They seem to inhabit some kind of alternate reality where that kind of thing is without consequences. But the thing is, respectability does matter. Teachers have always joked privately and mostly ironically about "corrupting the youth" (Socrates reference), but it was a joke.

I've always understood that conservatives exist and have political power. We have to coexist with them, and one way to do that is not to provoke them deliberately by posting videos bragging about converting their kids. These TikTokers seem to think they can get away with anything.

I’m far from conservative but I’d have my kid out of school in a moment over this sort of shit - which is at the milder end of what elementary school teachers are spouting on TikTik https://twitter.com/xxclusionary/status/1648925440537493505?s=20

Am I misunderstanding something? I don't believe gender identity should be taught in schools at all. Is the bill the same and just extended up to 12th grade, or does it actually say "don't say gay"?

Same bill now extended through 12th grade instead of 3rd.

It still allows for reproductive health/sex-ed classes to discuss these things - those classes apparently aren't a requirement of the state though, they're voluntary.

This is essentially barring gender identity and sexuality discussions from non-appropriate courses. As usual, the hand-wringing gender specials are blowing it out of proportion.

Thank you, that's what I thought, and frankly, I agree with this.

It baffles me how these people genuinely believe there will be no consequences to their insanity. I guess it's because they live in an artificial online bubble and have no concept of reality.

Apparently Florida is a really conservative state, at least as far as politicians go (mostly religious Repulicans). I can understand being concerned that there's a snowball effect going on and a lot of very minor things could end up becoming criminal offenses, but it feels like people are getting worked up about the wrong things.

Like people are saying "what, so if I'm gay and I go on a trip with my husband over the weekend, I can't even talk about it!". Back when I was in school, teachers never talked about their personal lives with us students. There was a very clear separation between adults and kids, and making sure personal boundary lines didn't get blurred. Is this a thing now???

I went to a catholic school and had no idea about wether or not my teacher was married... I wouldn't even bother to ask because they were there to teach not to be friends.

I definitely knew which of my teachers were married and had kids. No details, but at least that much.

Apparently, it's extended in some form through 8th grade and then allows it at a "developmentally appropriate" level for grades 9-12.

I graduated from high school in 1985. I was never taught the first thing about anything gay, and we never had sex education at all.
