The original post is gone but it's depressing to see the consensus (granted I assume sane responses were deleted) that 'allyship' must be prioritized everywhere all the time, even at a baby shower. It's disheartening to see the shift from "hey now no one's going after children" to "gotta get those kids from birth!"

OOP is so caught up that she can't even understand she's trampling boundaries.

It doesnt matter the subject of the book, or OOPs feelings, or LGB+ rights, or the relationship with Tiffany or Tiffany's mom. All of that is fluff to not address the problem.

This was a baby shower with a registry, and OOP went off-registry for her own virtue-signaling. OOP admits she bought it because she had given it at other showers and just "assumed she and her husband would like" it, and only brings up that is was off-registry when Tiffany says there is an issue.

So it was always for OOP benefit, not for Tiffany and her soon-to-be-family. And then:

Because Tiffany herself has always appeared to be pro-LGBTQ+ rights, I didn't see the big deal. I figured it'd be a good book for an ally's library.

IT'S A BABY SHOWER. BRINGS GIFTS THAT BENEFIT THE BABY.

what baby doesn't benefit from learning about the colors of the pride flag? Its right up there with learning to walk.

Their first words should be "trans women are women", right?

she was raised in a very conservative family

It seriously didn't cross my mind that this would be an issue. I've always bought pro-LGBTQ+ children's books for baby showers and it's never been an issue. I wouldn't purposefully put any of my friends in an awkward situation.

🙄

probably not an asshole but definitely naive

Tiffany is not an ally. I'm sorry you found out this way.

Also, do not apologize to bigots.

SHE IS NOT AN ALLY. SHE IS NOT A TRUE FRIEND. She's trying to make herself feel better about being a bigot.

insert that key & peele skit where you being really fucking awkward and making others uncomfortable isn't bigotry, it just makes you really fucking embarrassing when you people people in those situations

was gonna say, very naive of this person. i guess they are young, most of us who lived in the last century know that it was a provocative gift considering all her religious relatives.

Mmm. Nothing wrong in acknowledging your child may be gay/lesbian. But a gift for a newborn baby?? I think Oop had slight agenda tbh but family and friends were gracelessly rude to her

The post has been removed, but I gather a woman brought a pro-LGBT book as a gift to a baby shower for her straight friend whose family is quite conservative (and presumably some of them were present at the shower)? Is that right?

I did see that the OP also brought several useful gifts from the registry, so that's cool. She sounds generous. But...yeah, were I in her shoes, I would've skipped the book. I get that she's trying to say "Hey, gay families exist," which is fine, but ultimately I think it's up to the parents to decide when to introduce certain topics to their kid, whether I agree or not. Like NutterButterFlutter said, there's some boundary trampling happening here.

I no longer identify as a human being. All the funniest lines in the super Mario movie were spoken by non-humans anyway.
