I think the lesbian bias is because most homphobes fall into one or both of the following: they fetishize lesbians, or their hatred of homosexuality is relating to some ancient book talking about sex, and sex is defined by the presence of a penis, and therefore lesbians are ok or otherwise less terrible because they can't have "real" sex. Gay men are the absolute worst because they defy what men "ought" to do and pervert their antiquated idea of sex by doing it up another guy's butt rather than in a vagina. Lesbians are not terrible because they don't have "real" sex and straight men often love to watch lesbian porn. That's why they're "safe" for more audiences.

Exactly, they don't see women as actual competition and most traditions don't consider lesbian sex to be actual sex.

Also considering how the animation industry is, I don't doubt there's some male animator getting off on the lesbian relationships they write/animate.

And also there could be gay men working on stories that are kid friendly that happen to feature a gay couple in it but is getting turned down because of the double standard. And I'm not excusing the creepy lesbian fetishism mind you, that's just poor taste and creepy.

Another good point, especially the fetishizing aspect...
