I was so bitterly disappointed when he didn't run for Governor in California.

Which party would be fun under? CA recently held a recall election but the main opposition from Republicans was some nut job.

He's a Republican nutjob too, I am also a Republican nutjob.

Conservative media was signaling for months that they were preparing to back Grenell to run, he made comments repeatedly that he was seriously considering running, Caitlyn Jenner's weird sideshow campaign came across like it was a PR stunt aimed at making Grenell look good in comparison... I don't know why he didn't do it. I have to assume it was polling.

The GOP ended up running Larry Elder, who is a popular conservative talk radio host in Cali but not known outside the state.

Does that matter in elections at this level? Do people in, say, Michigan need to know who he is?

It brings in more money, attention, and potential voter support if you're known outside your state. For instance, there's a perennial Democratic candidate in Texas named Beto O'Rourke who isn't popular within that actual state but has a high profile nationally. He gets showered with so much attention by the media and he brings in so many volunteers from other places and funding, he'll be running for office forever in TX and never winning.

In smaller states it's not really needed but California is so large you essentially require a national effort in order to have your candidate win.

Ah okay, that makes a lot of sense, thank you!

Even I've heard the name Beto O'Rourke. I wouldn't know who he was if he ran into me in the street and I know absolutely nothing about the man, but there's familiarity in the name.
