I think Douglas has a point. Like my parents were advised to put me on birth control to femininize me during puberty... I'm sure the doc was homophobic and hoped the doses of estrogen would make me attracted to guys. Turn me from a young butch into a boy-crazy teenager. 🤮

I watch old psychiatric videos of patients on YouTube and saw one of a young woman who was obviously a butch. In the updated video recorded 2 years later (in the '60s), iirc, she was suddenly feminine and speaking more softly. Pissed me off how she was STRAIGHTened out. I think she mentioned having a husband and children. 🤢

I can't find the video. It was so enlightening though to see her "transition" from a James Dean-type butch to a feminine woman.

Yes, being gay was called a mental illness-- but the comparison that Douglas is drawing is still incorrect. The difference is that being gay is not a mental illness and gender dysphoria, by definition, is mental illness: it causes distress and is supposedly "treated" by having the person undergo medical transition.

I'm sorry you had a doctor who was trying to make you be more feminine as a kid, that's incredibly fucked up.
