I got into a bit of a debate on reddit (yeah I know, shouldn't have expected this to end any other way). The topic was about a nonbinary (as of almost two weeks ago, she went by 'she' since 2018) character in the show Young Justice. Someone made the EXTREMELY offensive mistake of calling this character "she." This obviously upset the TRAs, who had to make sure he knew to use 'they/them' pronouns.

One person replied and made a joke about respecting pronouns (yes, of course he was downvoted like crazy for committing such a crime) and I replied to him (seeing as he clearly hasn't lost his sanity like most people) "It’s especially jarring when most of the people who are all “respect pronouns” also have 0 respect for gay people who hate the word queer."

This of course lead multiple downvotes and multiple people trying to "educate me" on how its totally ok to use "the correct terminology" (yes, someone actually called it that) But when I said that I, a gay person, find the slur 'queer' to be offensive, those fuckers actually had the audacity to downvote me. Yes, they went from "don't be offensive" to downvoting a gay person for being offended by a slur, all in the span of 2 comments.

I don't know why I thought it could go any other way, especially after everything that's happened the last few years (I've been around since we were on reddit) but it still gets to me sometimes, like right now. Just wanted to get that off my chest/vent/rant, and this is the only real safe space to do that. I've also never actually made a post before, only replied, so sorry if anything is incorrect

Update: About half of my comments got removed by mods, including this one, which had 9 downvotes at the time:

Yep.. saying that slurs are awful and then turning around and telling us we have to be ok with them... claiming to hate capitalism while at the same time basing their "true selves" around buying shit... whining about "reducing people to their genitals" while at the same time calling people vagina-havers and penis-havers... Their hypocrisy and lack of self-awareness truly does continue to amaze.

I feel this so much. The entire TQ+ crowd wants to make certain that no one else speaks for them but they feel perfectly entitled to speak for us. They can’t back up a single argument and want to force everyone to comply. It’s intellectual and ethical bankruptcy.

I always had this impression that if you are a member of your group - for me it's asexual community - then you'd expect your voice there matters - like this is why such groups exist in the first place, right? Because evil cishets silence us or something. Good queers will listen to you. Well, no. You're more like some token member - all you have to do is preaching the gospel. Don't you even dare bring up your own perspective which goes against the established narrative. They say "heteronormativity" forces us to conform. Well lol I feel the same in these fucking spaces.

Your efforts are not in vain. You won't convince the people whose personas depend upon silencing the truth. But you planted a seed for sympathetic onlookers whose support for TQ is contingent upon thinking they're the poor oppressed minorities being unfairly picked on, and your downvotes are a testament to that not being the case. Someone will look at that and think, "hey, why does it work one way but not the other?" Peaking tends to be a process of noticing little things, trying to make sense of them, failing to make sense of them, and provisionally concluding you're missing something. These experiences keep adding up until the right thing comes along for that particular person from the right source at the right point in time that they cannot ignore. That's when they peak. And they may also realize from input like yours that gay/same-sex rights are not necessarily aligned with the queer movement, and that things seemed a lot more chill and harmonious before gay people were queered en masse from the top down.

I hope someone saw everything before most of it got removed by the mods. Only positive thing I have to say about them is that they at least removed the other guy's comments too, and I didn't even get banned surprisingly.

It's all about THEM controlling YOU, a one-way arrangement. There is no concept of reciprocity with this kind of person. Their right to their comfort cancels out your right to your comfort every time.
