Who benefits? The right benefits from having this sledge hammer to beat the left over the head with. Dollar for dollar it's probably the most effective propaganda tool the right has ever possessed. Enemies of the West benefit from the confusion, strife, and demoralization the issue causes across the board in western countries. Activist groups benefit from having a continued raison d'etre now that gay rights has been largely won. The medical lobby benefits from the influx of new patients.

The only people who are getting screwed are the useful idiots themselves, and women, who apparently nobody really cares about anyway, even other women.

This is the most important answer to your question. All signs point to tremendous Chinese influence on Western institutions, US in particular. Say what you want about their society, but they know how to play the long game.

The side explanation is that trans ideology is the perfect weapon, along with "hate speech" platitudes, to permanently destroy free speech. Who benefits?

That's something funny I've noticed too. TRAs do tell on themselves a lot. It becomes obvious that no one actually really believes this shit deep down. It reminds me of back when I used to read a certiain webcomic, the artist (who is a big TRA) was talking about the lore of the world. And someone asked if men in this fictional world couldn't use magic. And they responded "Of course men can use magic, why would having a Y chromosome prevent that?" or something. And I couldn't help but laugh a little because the artist had devoted a lot of time to talking about how their transwoman character was totally a woman despite being male. It's just like "Gee, are you saying having a Y chromosome makes you a man? But I thought maleness had nothing to do with being a man? Are you saying your transwoman character is a dude?"

And of course the biggest tell of all is the fact that trans people even get surgeries or take hormones at all. If they really believed that "man" and "woman" are just mental states then why bother with body modifications? Isn't transwomen taking estrogen/getting breast implants to show they're "women" and transmen taking T/getting mastectomies to show they're "men" cissexist, by their own logic?

As for why people are going along with it I suspect many just aren't thinking critically about it and don't want to be labelled a bigot. And others are predatory and using all this shit to hurt women and gay men.

i think with these types of sjw, they have normal feminism ,which is supportive of women as a distinct identity class, at war with the woke lib feminism, which treats women as an umbrella identity for everyone. They can't exist together but in their mind the just skip over the contradictions.

They really do tell on themselves all the time. The friend who commented about how periods make being a woman unpleasant at times had a full out argument with me a few weeks before saying that. She couldn’t believe I had the audacity to say only women are capable of menstruating.

I have a friend who is a hardcore TRA. She got some abuse online recently for joking about not liking dicks and also still refers to herself as a lesbian and talks about how much she exclusively loves women while married to a nonbinary person. But if you actually ask her, of course all 823975 genders are valid, and of course she would totally suck a girldick if she wasn't married already!

After befriending her I'm convinced only the most mentally ill actually believe in any of this.

Yeah. A little while back I was talking to a friend who would be mildly TRA, someone leftwing/liberal who just wants to be kind. Exactly what I was before I peaked. Why were chatting about how bad And Just Like That is and I mentioned Sara Ramirez dating a transman in real life and speculated that maybe Che Diaz would do the same as she's essentially playing herself. My friend kind of ducked her head and smirked before looking back up and giving an 'appropriate' response. It was just so clear right there that she doesn't actually believe that TMAM or TWAW.

Tbh, I feel like we're heading towards a societal peak because almost nobody actually believes in this, people just want to be kind and they don't realise how much damage is being done. At some point not too far off the harm that is being caused by TRA philosophy will become too hard for ordinary people to ignore. I just hope that it comes really soon because if it doesn't we really do risk the backlash allowing a huge rise in homophobia.

why do they claim being “misgendered” is violence? Why do things like “gay men only like penis” and “women have cervixes” send them into meltdown mode? Why aren’t trans people queuing up to date other trans people? Why are they so threatened by monosexual men and women? Why do facts make them so angry?

Its all pushed by SJW's. Sjw's believe words are literal violence. That way when they hear speech they don't like (radfem or conservatives) its ok to physically attack those people, as they attacked you first. With speech. They insist we all should be open to dating them so being monosexual is a no no. They usually don't want to date each other because they are also monosexual, OR that it doesn't give them true validation. Anything that proves their ideology is bullshit will enrage the sjw, because you are harming the marginalized, again, with speech.

So, why are we kowtowing to something we all know is utter bullshit? Why are we ruining kid’s lives? Why are we dogpiling on LGB people? Why are we trying to cancel public figures? Why are people losing their jobs? Why are we stifling scientific research? Why are we completely fucking over women? Why is any questioning or objection being shutdown across social media platforms and in public discourse?

All this happens because they SJW's are in control of the public discourse, and canceling, shaming, dogpiling, all those are the tools of the SJW. They set the narrative and if you question it they come after you. If you apologize, they move in for the kill.

Is it a gleeful and socially acceptable embrace of misogyny and homophobia? Is it people stupidly thinking blindly following something makes them good people? Is it a sociopathic attempt to control others’ language and actions with a “virtuous” shield?

Yes virtual signaling signaling people know how moral a person you are because you have all the right opinions. They don't see it as homophobia or misogyny because when they question that the ideology starts to unravel, hopefully.

I truly don’t understand why we’re at this point for something so obviously untrue sitting on a house of cards.

They have been teaching this in college for awhile, this cultural marxism, then they graduate and go teach at schools and make little SJW's in high school and now k-12. They also go into HR departments at companies and then change corporate culture from inside, like what happened with the American aclu.
It's the destruction and redefining of words to fit a narrative, its backward science, you start with what you want to prove, then bend the narrative to fit that.

After my group therapy experiences which were full of pronoun people and their eager-to-perform allies, yes, I'm quite certain few people truly believe or have fully thought through the ideas they vocally support. It's clear they've never had to participate in an actual debate about them and defend them to themselves or others. In my group sessions, these people were the first to slip up on others' pronouns, including their partners' and each others. The TRA allies would go from shaming people for not understanding pronoun protocols and participating in choruses of "Fuck JK Rowling" and "Fuck TERFS" to talking about misogyny in the world and how girls and women are discriminated against and mistreated due to their menstruation and with regard to their right to control their reproduction. No one uses "pregnant people," "menstruator," and "birthing parent" language in real life. They assume pronouns like everyone else.

They don't believe what they're saying and wouldn't even be able to unpack what TWAW means on a literal level, and they've never needed to. It's all social performance enforced by the sheer magnitude of how many people they see participating in the performance and the fact that they understand the people who participate in that performance to be the goodies and those who don't to be the baddies. Safety in numbers means there's no need to question or think through anything because surely that's already been done. Their actions become more about social bonding through participating in outrage culture and delighting in punishing others who fall out of line.

People drop this kind of act when you treat them like they're stupid.

Just saw this post of yours after I posted this. Maybe I am underestimating just how many people REALLY don't believe this stuff. I really, really, really appreciate this post, because I've had trouble trying to imagine just what is going on in the minds of other people.

To answer your question-- my guess is as good as yours, but I know that at least some of it is this:

Is it people stupidly thinking blindly following something makes them good people?

and this:

Is it a sociopathic attempt to control others’ language and actions with a “virtuous” shield?

and even this, at least as regards the homophobia:

Is it a gleeful and socially acceptable embrace of misogyny and homophobia?

I think there are multiple dimensions to the popularity of the transgender movement. I've witnessed, in person, examples of all these three motivations that you describe, and they all deeply disturb me. I do believe that (some of) the people who like to try to control others' language with a "virtuous" shield are very likely to be people who feel like they lack control in other areas of their lives, and so seek to gain control and stability over something. Homophobia and misogyny are the costs of their self-centered, though pitiable, struggles. Of course, an impactful handful are just sociopathic, period.

I've witnessed straight people jump on the chance to make jokes about "gays," spreading stereotypes, and it sickens me. I have a mental shortlist of the ones who I've seen do this, and the ones who I've seen choose to not act disrespectfully when invited to. (These examples happened within the past year or so, not like five or ten years ago or something.)

But I actually want to address this question of yours in particular...

Is it people stupidly thinking blindly following something makes them good people?

This is my working hypothesis:

  • Women-- and especially lesbian/bisexual (LB) women-- are disproportionately exposed to trauma and violence.

  • Trauma survivors are at disproportionate risk for PTSD-- and PTSD is motivated by fear. (avoidance of fear-inducing stimuli, specifically)

  • The transgender movement threatens anyone who dares question its tenets with social shaming, social shunning, character attacks, and in some cases, targeted harassment and violence.

  • Now imagine you are a person who has faced a lot of trauma, and probably gotten very little help for it, if any. (Not so difficult (edit: I am guessing) for many people on this sub to imagine.) You are driven by fear. And there is a whole movement of people pretending that some men are women and some women are men, and they'll threaten you if you don't fall in line. All you have to do in order to not be aggressively confronted is just tiptoe around this one topic. Anyone who has been in an abusive relationship or been threatened with violence probably has experience with tiptoeing on eggshells. It's a deceptively easy behavior to fall into without noticing; or at least, that's been my experience.

I think that many people who blindly follow do so out of fear. They're blind because their fear is turning off their critical thinking skills.

Then again, I could just be biased, because that is the way it used to be for me. :) I'm glad I've had access to decent mental health resources since then.

I actually think Judith Butler might believe it, but it's equally or more likely that she's just a grifter. Camille Paglia has accused her of as much and she has a pretty good BS detector. In addition to Judith: a lot of autistic people, whose reasoning capabilities are top notch but who operate from faulty first premises.

People in the above group amount to a tiny minority, though. The rest, those who go along with it, are narcissists, useful idiots or normal people who are afraid. Great post.
