I understand why vulnerable LGB people who have been cast out would be motivated to recast their sexual orientation as a badge of honor as an initial coping mechanism, but for there to ever be peace or normalcy, the only answer is for sexual orientation to be seen as neutral.

Completely agree. I'd only add... I think there's a big distinction to be made between telling LGB kids, "You have value as a human being, exactly as you are, existing with this immutable characteristic" and "Your value as a human being comes from this immutable characteristic that you have." The latter is breeding grounds for narcissism, IMO. I never fell into the second line of thinking and I question whether it is beneficial even in the slightest. People get mad sometimes when you make this sort of distinction, saying that it's splitting hairs, but I don't think that it is.
