Gay marriage passed in Switzerland. All 26 cantons voted for it, 64% of voters voted for it, and the law takes affect on 1 July 2022. The act includes adoption rights (good) and IVF treatment.

Another referendum on tax redistribution was held on that same day, and it was resoundingly rejected. Just for those who were confused on the fate of the gay marriage vote.

The results had been announced since 26 September last. I’m surprised that the Masked Guy hasn’t posted a video on the subject since the day before the referendum.

Results

Can someone tell me who won? I don't speak French.

And those propaganda posters were just horrific.

64% voted for gay marriage, 35% against, so it passed. But the Swiss government gets to figure out exactly when it will take effect.

The results of 2158 of the 2158 municipalities are known. State: 64.1% yes, 35.9% no

I think most voted yes, but I'm confused as to what impact this vote would have on law.

It grants gay couples the same legal rights as straight couples in regards to marriage, including adoption, IVF, citizenship, widow's pension etc.

Awesome! I wasn't sure if this was like a confirmatory vote after the government representatives had already voted on it or what.

TLDR (please correct me if I made a mistake):

  • Conservative Christian groups in Switzerland called for a referendum vote to challenge a federal ruling on marriage equality

  • Bunch of crazy far-right posters were distributed, including one that suggested that marriage equality for LGB would lead to enslavement of women...? What?

I'm also confused as to the effect of the referendum. Would this have overturned the federal ruling if voters had voted "no" to marriage equality? It looks like the majority across regions voted "yes", though.

enslavement of women

They were referring to surrogacy. Which obviously wasn’t going to be legalised in Switzerland, because Switzerland bans surrogacy for all couples and individuals. I guess that gay marriage opponents were afraid that if the gay marriage referendum passes, it would lead to a debate on surrogacy.

Yes, ultimately the people have the power in Switzerland. Though the houses of Parliament still have the final say in how a law is implemented. Basically both houses voted yes, with the majority of opposition coming from the right wing faction (3/4 voted no) that would be parties like the SVP (People's Party), Lega Dei Ticinese and the party that actually brought the challenge the EDU, who split from the Protestant party, because they weren't Christian enough

One of the people who put the posters up is Oskar Freysinger, who's a fairly notorious shit stirrer on these sorts of things. Ultimately though the referendum was accepted with a majority in all cantons, including the more conservative rural ones.

Makes sense, thanks for explaining.
