But when we leave town to go see friends or go to the beach, we’re forced to go through Trump country and things get dicey. As a “WOC,” I’ve done my best to play the “submissive quiet wife”

My partner and I grew up in two different regions of the USA. However, we both grew up in very rural areas that overwhelmingly voted for Trump. We now live in a suburb where literally over 80% of the town voted for Trump. Between our home and frequently going to visit our parents, we have never encountered homophobic hate. In fact, people have been nothing but kind to us. (We have, however, been called slurs and harassed in the blue city where we both work.)

It’s baffling that OP chooses to build people she’s clearly never spent time with into bogeymen for a problem she is never going to encounter. It’s even more bizarre that she’s so worried people will judge her for being Hispanic or “gay,” yet she’s apparently never once considered she’s unfairly prejudiced to roughly half the nation.

Yep, I had the exact same experience. Go to the most red states in the country with my fiancé and have no problem, walked hand in hand with my bf in the center of a blue city and got called a f****t in under ten minutes.

I'm sorry to hear that you have had that happen to you! That is a really interesting pattern, though... Why do you think you've gotten more harassment in the city?

My partner and I have only gotten it once together and it was some white guys shouting at us. We have both gotten it separately a few times at work. I used to work (and she still does) in a poor, African American neighborhood. Tbh, I don’t know if it’s a class thing or a race thing, but everyone who has name-called or made fun of us has been from that community.
