It's not a term for a regular friendship or FWB, It's an equivalent of a long-term, exclusive partnership. Does it need a special label? Probably not, I doubt anyone ever would say queer platonic partner irl, but it does describe the specific nature of a relationship to discuss with some close friends or on the internet. Ppl irl just use the normal stuff like girlfriend, wife, partner etc. But within the right scapes there's no harm in having such label Imo. I doubt anyone would bother to explain that stuff to straight ppl.

Edit: I do not believe that asexuality or aromantism makes you part of LGB or not straight but that doesn't mean ace/aro ppl can't have their own labels to put on how they feel that is different from the norm and LGB people can also be ace/aro. (Safe your comments about aromantism to yourself, I've heard it all, I don't care if you don't believe in it, you do you.)

What you're describing literally just sounds like a romantic relationship. "Exclusive" implies that fidelity is expected. So we're talking about a relationship that probably involves sex or at least very strong feelings of commitment and the partners being faithful to each other? How is this not just a romantic relationship? What meaningful distinction is there?

My understanding is that it's different from typical romantic/sexual relationships because they don't kiss, makeout, have sex etc. So it's basically another term for a platonic life partner. I suppose you could just call it a very committed friendship, but most people don't share finances and raise kids with their buddies.

They may hold hands, cuddle, kiss, have sex, etc. or may not.

Right here it says they sometimes do make out or have sex though.
