I recent finished Woke Racism by John McWhorter. McWhorter is a linguistics professor at Columbia University who also happens to be Black. The premise of the book is in the quest to be anti-racist, people have become actively racist and destructive to the Black community in America. McWhorter breaks down the mentality of people championing this movement, discusses how to interact with them, and provides useful alternatives to actually helping Black people.

While it’s about race relations and not LGB rights, its contents feel eerily familiar. Nearly everything McWhorter has to say about being Black in this timeline sounds like what being a lesbian has felt like the past several years. Likewise, the breakdown of unreasonable, dogmatic thinking, mob mentality, and condescension was beyond relatable.

I am not saying that being Black and being LGB are analogous. I am, however, saying that it sounds like both of us are dealing with a common and pernicious enemy. McWhorter offers great advice on understanding and standing up to bullies. Overall, this is a solidly written and unapologetic book that I absolutely recommend.
