First off, thank you for taking the time to screenshot and preserve all of this, it must have taken you a while.

Second, I'm disappointed to see The Times shut down debate in such a blunt way. I don't read The Times because all of their articles are behind a paywall (in the UK at least) but I still hold them in my mind as being a fairly sensible, 'grown up' paper. To me, they have always been to the UK what the NYT is used to be to the United States. I wouldn't be surprised if there were some trananigans going on the comment section and the editors had no choice.

It seems like there are obvious generational rifts growing at many organizations like newspapers and the ACLU. The older employees are far more in favor of speech and the younger employees are freaking out trying to censor everything.

This article (a review of a book) explains the phenomenon somewhat. I read it the other day and found it quite interesting.

It sure looks that way. The young ones just have no idea what the consequences are if they succeed with they are trying to eradicate. We can't and shouldn't make the entire world a warm, fuzzy little safety bubble. Because it's the narcissists who will try to define what "unsafe" is and that will always be 100% of everything that contradicts their twisted, self-serving agenda. Tyranny is the end result as we are seeing.

I really hope this is their deer-in-headlights moment where they understand that they only thought they were big and mighty because a few billion people didn't know yet.

They are also behind a paywall in the USA. Shame.

At least they peaked a bunch of people anyway.

It took a couple of hours and then I had to rearrange my day a bit. I didn't think they would be taken down entirely but it's the Times, so I did expect the opportunity to read them would be short-lived. And yeah, as an American I've seen them sort of as the UK NYT way as well.

There were some that had to be removed for violating rules and I imagine they weren't particularly civil, given the candid and blunt nature of what was allowed to remain. Probably someone just wanted to get back to their other duties finally.

But they could have kept the ones that had been contributed already. I certainly hope it was that instead of some higher-up getting cold feet.
