In the past, mass protests against LGB were mostly crazed Christian groups chanting "you're going to hell!" Not good, but mostly signs and shouting.

Now it's masked thugs with weapons and a lust for blood. This is NOT an improvement.

Well, it is a thing for violently homophobic people to be closet bisexuals. That's the basis of the concept of homophobic (male-on-male) rape, which is a lot more common in prisons and countries where being gay is illegal, but does occur outside of those situations.
