When I read it in school I didn't get gay from it but I was pretty clueless about sex and relationships then. I never understood why he made his friend fall off the tree, that made zero sense to me. I read it as a psychopath not understanding why he couldn't relate to anyone and pointlessly injuring and driving away his only friend.

Well he has other friends, but him and Finny are really close. I read him as being insanely paranoid and hateful and jealous and but still being in love with him.

See I couldn't see being hateful and jealous and "in love", like why would you hurt someone if you love them. Thats the part that made no sense to me. I couldn't make any sense out of it so I came up with what I wrote above. I mean as a teenager, nowdays I think I have a little bit more insight into psychology but as a teenager the "in love" part just didn't match up with the "I want to hurt this person" part.

I see what you mean. It is common, but I can see how some teens wouldn't get that. It made sense to me, but everyone's psychology and experiences are different. Some grow up faster lol.
