I think part of it is size. TumblrInAction has close to 500,000 subscribers, and I think Reddit management is a lot happier to sacrifice something like LGBDropTheT with 20,000 subscribers to the mob than they are to ban one that's so popular. They know banning it would generate a major backlash and further delegitimize Reddit.

Nah. The_Donald was one of the biggest non-default subreddits and the AHS crowd larped it enough to get it banned.

People who think reddit is legitimately an open forum can't be awoken, I think
