The days have started getting shorter, the cold wind from the north has already started blowing.... it's almost that time of year again! My favorite parts of autumn: butternut squash and ghost stories. I don't care if they're stupid or don't make sense.

I miss autumn.

The nights getting cool again, and early evening/morning fog. The leaves changing color, and a different kind of brightness in the world. The smell of woodstoves and fireplaces burning. The air being crisp and clean. Snuggling up in blankets and being cozy everywhere inside the house. Looking forward to everyone decorating their homes for Halloween, and vicariously feeling the excitement of kids trick-or-treating (not that it happens where I'm at anymore, but I still feel it!). Maybe even getting a pumpkin and baking up the seeds, and making some homemade apple cider.

And then after that, looking forward to Thanksgiving and trying out all sorts of recipes and stuffing my face with food and booze for 4 days straight.

Kids don't go door to door anymore where I am either, they throw a block parties in the street and the kids trick-or-treat table to table. Happy medium I guess. I made popcorn balls for them last year but couldn't hand them out due to Covid concerns (my bad) so we hung some in a tree and let birds eat them.

We used to have a huge group of kids (no actual adults!) with our giant dog in tow. One of my many adult goals was to hand out pennies to trick-or-treaters like an older widow in our neighborhood used to do. Haha fuck you, kids 😈 You couldn't buy anything with 3¢ in the 90s either.

4? I can barely take one.

Here they go to strip malls or shopping centers, or other group media-approved safe places. It's "unsafe" to go door-to-door or have block parties/meetups in neighborhoods, apparently. I was super disappointed my first 2 years after I moved here, bought a ton of candy and was excited to hand it out, and not a single kid on the block ever came to the door :(

Noice noice noice!

LMAO... I guess I was one of the lucky ones in that area at least. In my small town back then, even pennies and nickels went a distance. I was a frequent shopper at our mercantile shop.

Oh believe me, I hate myself on day 4. But I enjoy it until then!

Oooh, I just thought of something. Make yourself the wicked witch of the block, and make "crow-balls" to hang in the trees. Nothing sweet or salty since that's bad for them, but something with plain peanuts or seeds of some sort.

You have a little over a month to make crow friends subtly by leaving bits here and there around your tree. And then on Halloween morning, decorate the tree like it's crow-Christmas.

You may not get the kids to come by, but you'll definitely stand out when the crows come to roost, LOL

Haha natural decorations. Do you have a recipe? I'm googling and can't pull one up. Lots of instructions on how to get rid of crows. Terror eyes are a thing. Huh.

Start out with seeing what your local crows like - peanuts and sunflower seeds (in the shell) are usually good to begin with. Leave a couple handfuls scattered for them around the same time every day so they learn your pattern. Once you know what they like, look up "bird seed balls", and instead of seed, use whatever your crow bros enjoy.
