That's something that always struck me about detransitioners. They were the helpless victims who were misled by Big Pharma and Big Trans and nobody tried hard enough to stop them.

This is a convenient narrative and I can definitely see the appeal. I have no doubt that a certain proportion of detransitioners were indeed helpless victims subject to perfidious doctors in the pocket of Big Pharma.

But then I reflect on how, especially in the United States, the doctor-patient relationship has become so transactional, and some of these TRAs are so militant that nothing anyone could have said could have diverted them from this path. We all remember how we were as teenagers and how It'S noT a PhAsE MuM ThIS iS wHO I Am, and this is, I suppose, the logical conclusion of that mindset.

I guess my point is the detransitions-as-helpless-victims narrative robs them of their agency. Ultimately, they chose.

I miss the days when getting a shitty band tattoo was the worst decision a 16 year old made.

I partially agree with you. I don't think it is fair for them to blame their family, friends, or even doctors for what happened because by that point they couldn't have been reasoned with, but they are victims of the TRAs. They are sold lies about how transitioning will make everything better, and about how there are trans people walking around them everyday and they don't even know. And the idea that if not now but soon everyone will accept them for it.

I agree. It's like the defence of the young men and women who raced to Syria to join ISIS. Yes, they're young and impressionable but by the time most of us are 10 we have enough of a moral compass to know it's wrong to run around cutting people's fucking heads off.

Remember that they were also casting themselves in the role of helpless victim when they were “trans”. They seem to play the same role, even if the details have changed.

I struggle with this so much cus so many of these detransitioners were forced into this, mainly the ones who were put on puberty blockers as kids. The adults who chose to transition, yes I think they are in control and did choose this path but the kids, they chose to be gender non-conforming but their parents are the ones who chose to make them trans. More and more I think this won't end until enough of the "trans kids" are old enough to detransition and sue the shit out of their idiot parents for experimenting on them and robbing them of a healthy body and adulthood.

Late to this thread, but I just wanted to say, this is a really good point. Perhaps we ought to distinguish more often between child transitioners-- who really were pressured into it-- as opposed to those who medically transitioned as consenting adults.

I also worry that some of the people who do pose this framing of detransitioners may be emphasizing the experience of heterosexual detrans people, and disenfranchising that of LGB people. For example, a transman who fetishizes gay men then detransitions might suggest that she was conned, and to at least some extent she was, but it's worth acknowledging the part her actions played in negatively impacting gay male communities. She was still an identity tourist.

Even if you make an honest mistake, you still have to take responsibility for your actions. That's what's missing from the narrative. Ultimately, LGB people lose out in the end.
