NOTE: In this context, "ban conversion therapy" is NOT a euphemism for "let's mindlessly push affirmation therapy on children," see this post for more details.

I thought I would throw together a quick summary of the positions/opinions of several groups involved in this debate, because sometimes people mean very different things when they say the same phrase or term, like "conversion therapy"...

Groups and their positions on banning conversion therapy:

  • Evangelicals - Group AGAINST a "ban on conversion therapy" because they want to keep performing conversion therapy on LGB people.

  • Equalities Ministry (UK) - Has stated they will ban conversion therapy, AND still allow evidence-based therapy-- i.e. are not necessarily in favor of the "affirmation approach" for transgender-identified people, but are definitely against homophobic conversion therapy performed on LGB people.

  • LGBT+ groups - i.e. LGBTQ+. Groups SUPPORTING one type of "ban on conversion therapy" that includes banning any therapeutic approach for trans-identified individuals that is not immediately "affirming" of gender identity.

  • LGB-friendly groups - Groups SUPPORTING a "ban on conversion therapy" that does not villify standard evidence-based therapy for people with gender dysphoria, but does target homophobic conversion therapy performed on LGB people.

How surprising.

Also, most of the people who I've seen defending conversion therapy know nothing about how it is actually performed and all the shit that's involved with it.

It's not rare for the staff who works on these 'christian booth camps' that perform conversion therapy to sexually assault and even rape the people (which includes kids) who, in most cases, are coerced to participate in this shit.

How surprising.

Yeah, figured it's obvious but might as well state their official stance. Given that LGB people who voice any sort of disagreement or hesitancy about the transgender movement's aims tend to get painted in the media as being "conservative" and on the same side of Evangelicals and other homophobic religious groups, I wanted to clarify each subgroup's aims.

Do you by chance know of any good reading materials or other resources about conversion therapy? I would like to learn more, but whenever I search about it I have to wade through a sea of "non-affirmative therapy is conversion therapy" bullshit.

Unfortunately, most of which I know is based on first hand experience, as all of the material I could find on this only focused on the 'methodological' aspects of conversion therapy and not all of the bs surrounding it.
