Queer has always been an insult. Queer means strange, not normal, weird. Gay has been used as an insult but at its root, it means happy/joyous. That's why it can be reclaimed.

Homosexual is clinical, but why isn't heterosexual also considered clinical and offensive? Is it because it hasn't been used with derision, because that seems to be the case these days. Also I weirdly find homosexual non-offensive if it's said with four syllables rather than five, if that makes sense?
