Same-gender marriage has never been illegal. Same-sex marriage was and continues to be in some countries. A good portion of eastern Europe 2 people of the same gender can get married, but 2 people of the same sex can't regardless of their gender.

I remember seeing an article a few years ago about how a “lesbian” couple was sticking it to Putin and getting married through a loophole. It was billed as a gay victory. That loophole was that one was a transbian. It never ceases to amaze me how stupid and insensitive TQ+ is.
