"L" is for "liberation", "greek" implies gay, lambda is the greek l. So a lot of people wore lamdas in the 70s and 80s to mean gay liberation.

I just checked. Lambda Legal still exists, along with the Lambda Literary Awards. Otherwise, the symbol is still common but usually in the background.
